Removing Hook from Fish

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

What do you guys do if you can't get the hook out of a fish in a timely manner? I've left cranks hooked on fish, but what do you do if you have to keep a fish in a livewell for a tournament?

Never had that problem . How often does that happen to you ?

Not too often, but I dont usually crimp my barbs so sometimes hooks get really jammed.

That could be your problem. The proper tools for any job makes it easier.

If you do nothing else you must get a pair of Pliers... They are the easiest way to get a stubborn hook out. You wont have this problem again you can always get the hook out.

Seriously, if you are going to fish cranks, you need a FishGrip and a set of needle nose.  You will inevitably encounter a situation where you simply cannot easily hold the fish, and remove the bait without getting hurt.

What?

Just jerking us around I think. Tournament fisherman

and no pliers? Leave crankbaits with the fish? Have you

ever heard a story like that?

Oh that explains alot.

Okay. You mentioned keeping a fish alive in tournaments,

I misunderstood. So, a better response: Carry needle nose

pliers for hook removal.

Learn this procedure, too:

Yes, i think pliers are a must when you are fishing crankbaits.

Also the article Roadwarrior mentioned is VERY VERY helpful. I seem to get gut hooks often and with using the technique that he mentioned it comes right out!

If you remember that article of getting the hook out i dont think you should ever kill a fish just by catching it.
