Negative plus negative did not equal a positive!

Featured Replies

I've been keeping some fishing conditions stats over the past year. Two things have been rather consistent on my lake:

-Poor fishing on a full moon phase during the day.

-Poor fishing on high barometric pressure.

Well yesterday the pressure topped out at a whopping 30.4 and the moon was so big and full in the late afternoon that you could see the "man" laughing at me!

I proceeded to get 1 bite (and land it) in 3 hrs....and that was while fishing on and around my honey hole!!!!! haha :D  Still was fun, tho.  Had the whole lake to myself.  I love cold weather up here.

Great post.

It shows that you need to write things down about your fishing locations as you cannot remember everything and by having it memorialized you can see trends, etc. develop.  :)

What adjustments did you make for the conditions you were fishing? Location, lure presentation, tackle?

I've been wanting to keep records like that for years, but i get started then in a week or two i quit doing it.

Just curious as to how long you've been keepin records?  I definately need to stick with it this year!!

Been keeping notes since the ice broke last March. I fish one lake so that elimiates a lot of variables and I can pretty much establish some conditional patterns with my data. Kinda fun.

Well, still learning of course, and I was on shore, so I tried slowing things down. Went to a shakey head and worm and tried to slowly walk it back, stopping and shaking it a little along the way. Tried slowly walking jigs/craws also. Caught the one fish on a Yamamoto Kreature T-rigging it through some brush. So I kept trying that presentation for awhile. Tried fishing deep water sides of drop-offs, as far as I could cast. Tried a split shot rigged worm through, and around cover. Then as it was getting dark I noticed some baitfish swirling the surface so I made a few casts swimming that Kreature as close to the surface as I could.  Didn't have time to try a topwater or shallow crank.

As always, I am open to suggestions. ;)

Like most anglers I often struggle on days of H pressure.  Though I can usually get a few bites.  You can also try to get reaction strikes if you can't finesse 'em into biting.

But it seems like the fish have been even more adversely affected by H pressure this year than previous.  Its like they have lockjaw regardless of what ya throw at em.  I'm guessing it has to do with the cooler temps we experienced on average this year in our area.  Just a thought.

Not much anyone can do fishing from shore under those conditions. My suggestion is move down to the lower 1/3 of the lake where deeper water should be available and fish the dam area and first major points.

I would try a Yamamoto Kreature or Hula grub, C-rigged (slip shot) and cast at 45 degree angle, slightly up hill. This would be like fishing a jig slowly, except it shouldn't hang up as often and float off the bottom a little.

South Dakota at this time of the year would be very frustrating I would think.

when we get in a real bad front with a high pressure system i generally try to either fish deeper or fish really slow if there's no deep water available.  i love flipping or pitching in a high pressure front bc usually it means they are right on the wood, or you can try a crankbait and bang it around for a reaction strike.  don't know what to tell you about the full moon, i usually do best with either  a full moon or a new moon.

If a person were to keep records for more than one lake, I suppose it would be easy enough to keep a separate notebook for each lake, or place of fishing, say maybe a single subject spiral bound notebook for each lake?? That way any data you get will only apply to the one place, and any similar data on a different lake with different results won't conflict with the first, but could be easily compared so you see if one lake is similar to another or if the same conditions in a different place create similar or different results. Just an idea, but I've never kept records on fishing. Think I'll start now though.

Just remember your basic math

negative + negative = more negative

negative x negative = positive

So you should just figure out a way to multiply weather conditions and you'll spank 'em all day long.

Makes it sound easy don't it?
