Cranks and jigs around wood.

Featured Replies

At the lake I've started fishing there's a lot of like tree branches and wood cover shallow and I'm sure there's bass hanging around in there, but last Saturday and Sunday I kept getting hung up ended up loosing 2 jigs and kept having to get cranks undone. How do you get your cranks to "deflect" this cover and not get your jigs hung up? I've read all about people fishing cranks in flooded timber and "bouncing" it off cover and stuff but I can't seem to do it w/o getting caught. Any tips? Or am I completely off?

On the cranks I have heard that square lips help alot.

Yeah I've heard the same and that's what I was sticking to out there but still kept gettin caught. :-[

You have to thread the crank through the brush.  When you feel the crank coming up on a limb, slow down and help it through the mess.

It helps to pause for a second when you hit a branch and let your crank float up and continue retrieving.  It mimics a stunned baitfish when you pause.

Well, as you develop a better "feel" you will be able to avoid some

hang-ups, but not all. If you are fishing from a boat, a lure retriever

will recover 95% or more of your lures. From the bank, you should

probably stick with mostly single hook tackle. You are going to lose

lures.

BUY IN BULK ;D

I can certainly relate. Fishing from the bank in shallow water, I plan on losing at least 1 to 2 lures per hour. From shore, we don't have the advantage of repositioning to pull at a snag from a different angle.

One of the other problems I have is that my crank will collect weeds after about 15 feet and the weeds kill the action.

My 2009 plan of action:

- keep throwing into cover

- buy in bulk

- stick with floating baits that will rise on a pause (after contacting structure)

- pay attention to the feel of cover (as stated below)

- practice the bow & arrow technique on snags

- go back to super shallow cranks when my tackle box is empty ;)

- keep reading BassResource to learn more techniques

i have the same issue as well. i am learning more about tossing cranks and not getting them hung up. you are going to lose a few bud but the more you practice the better you will get at the "feel"

my question is, if you get hung, how do you get it out without a lure puller? i hate getting caught up on the first cast bc i have to get the boat in there to get it out and it ruins the spot for a bit know what i mean?

Exactly I felt like I was in such a good position and then I'd get stuck and have to troll over there and get it which I felt made me have to move.  >;)

What crank were you using?

Flatside DT, little johns, and laser lures. All have square lips and would still get hung up.

Yeah I saw this on TV but it seems like when I hit the branch to realize I need to let it float up it's already hung! Maybe I need to slow down when cranking?

LOL yep thats me as well.  ;)  it takes concentration. you will feel the line stiffen, thats when you need to eithe slow down a ton or just stop and feel your way through it. its hard now doubt and the pros make it look sooo simple but its not. what you could do is buy some cheaper cranks and practice with it. i know thats like purposely flushing $$ down the crapper but i dont know how else to get better at it.

there were some videos on youtube that show you how to get un-hung.

I wish I could afford that! Haha I'm going to just have to start slowing down and paying more attention to when I hit something I guess. But the easiest way to get unhung is to reel your rod down to the lure it almost will always come undone when you do that!
