Check the rapala website or the Feb. 09 issue of North American Fisherman. They have an article on using both the Clackin Rap and the Xcalibur One Knocker and they recommend fishing it like a jig.

I think you defintly need to upgrade to about 14-17# flourocarbon line.  I think the reel will be O.K.  But it wouldn't hurt to get about a 7' meduim rod for longer cast.

Reel is fine, rod and line is not.

This lure is way to heavy for that set up.

Line strength is dependent upon where you're going to be fishing it.

I mainly fish ponds where the cover is weeds and I use 10lb mono on my cranking setup.  If I were fishing around more brush I'd go up to 12 lb, but don't know if I'd go much higher than tat.

I also plan on trying out some flouro or copoly soon.

Trilene 8# will work fine, as long as you are working rocky structure.  If you are going to do the yo-yo thing and snapping the bait in weeds, I'd go heavier, like 10# or 12# line.  Most of my light and medium cranking is done with P-Line CXX 8# and a medium/moderate rod.  For heavier cover, I use a MH/Moderate rod and 10# CXX.

Also, what's the lure rating on your rod?

The Clackin Rap is on the larger size (7/8 ounce) so a medium rod may not be strong enough, but it depends on what the ratings are.

If I were to hazard a guess then I'd say that it isn't the right rod for that bait.  You can probably get away with it, but don't try to do super long snap casts.

My recommendation would be to get a new rod for larger cranks, I'd go with a 6'6" or 7' MH BPS Crankin' Stick, but don't buy it unless it's on sale.

Some don't like fishing lipless cranks because they are

a "do nothing" lure. They perform best without any help

from the fisherman (steadily retrieved). The "action" is

created by the lure itself.
