fish with one eye

Featured Replies

I caught a bass earlyier today off my dock that only had one eye it was about 3 pounds but my question is what are the chances of a one eyed bass getting to be that size? and does It affect his hunting and ability to find cover?

Just like a dog with 3 legs it learns how to do everything with what they were given.

That fish will survive by instinct and grow much larger if his food source is good enough.

the chances are pretty good. bass have an amazing biological feature called electroreception that help them detect and feel prey.  bass's hearing and feeling are synonymous with each other. Unlike you and I where we may hold a conversation with another person understanding what is being said, a bass hears and feels the vibration from the different sounds and movements in the water, different sounds will cause different pitches that send vibrations and a bass will get familiar with certain sounds such as pitches and vibrations made from natural forage, also they are able to feel any displacement of water within the vicinity of their prey caused by even the slightest movement.

I guess the question you have to ask yourself is "how did you catch him?" - if you were using a bait with lots of vibration - then it was probably able to detect the lure through it's laterl lines - if you were using a more finesse presentation - then it may have been the scent that attracted the fish.

These creatures truly are amazing in how they can survive and thrive.

A couple of weeks ago I took this one eyed gal from under a dock near a drop off.

She sucked in a jig-n-craw with in 2-3 seconds of the bait slipping into the water. She had no trouble finding this bait although it may have very well hit her on the head.

I caught a 7.5 one time with one eye.

I guess she just never saw it coming.

the question is how many fish do you leave with 1 eye after catching them. It seems like I hook fish and it comes out through the eye all the time. But that is probably because I catch a lot of dinks.

ya i was fishing this private pond and that's what kept happening to me.

Anyways, when one of a bass's senses are hampered, the other ones will get heightened. so if a bass lives in muddy water and cant see that far, they might have better smell or their lateral line/ability to feel vibrations may be better. Same with blind people, their sense of touch and sound will get better since they use it more.
