zara spook puppy

Featured Replies

this weekend while fishing i decided i would try to learn how to walk the dog with the zara spook puppy.  Needless to say it didnt go well.  I did have one attack on it put evidently the fish missed it because i did not get a hook up.  Can anyone please tell me some advice or tips on how to walk the dog.  for the life of me i could not get that thing to zig zag all nice across the water.  Also what is the best way to use this lure?? horizontally across the bank or out in the open or from the bank to the boat?? Any help would be wonderful

In my experience with Spooks the smaller ones are harder to work than the larger ones, I don't tie directly to the eye of the bait & I really have to concentrate hard on the smaller Puppy.

Horizontally across the bank or out in the open or from the bank to the boat??

Totally depends on the bass & where they are holding :)

Yeah, the smaller ones are harder to walk. Try the spook Jr. size first and then once you figure out the technique try the other sizes.

This was going to be my advice almost word for word.

The spook puppy was the last bait I learned to walk the dog with.  Its pretty tough to get the hang of because of its tiny size.  My fishing buddy has caught a lot of really nice bass on the spook puppy.

Yep, the zara puppy is pretty hard to walk at first....I'm still not very good at it.  Try the original spook or super spook junior then work to the zara puppy

i have had a lot more success with a zara super spook jr.

and more than likely the fish didnt miss the bait, you probably tried to set the hook to early. its very hard but you have to have extreme patience when a fish hits. making sure to give it enough time to get it in its mouth

It requires a much softer pop than its bigger brothers. I'm with everyone on starting with a bigger one. You'll catch some toads on em more so than the puppy.

If you really want to work a puppy, work it slower and find a line that doesn't sink fast( bigger lines and mono). pop it on a semi slack line should be enough but to be honest its got alot to do with your feel for it. after awhile you'll be on here giving the tips about it.  Good Luck

Wrist only! Don't move your elbow at all.Semi slack line.A light but

sharp twitch downward or down to the side a little. It is almost like

just relaxing your fingers on your rod and then squeezing them back together. It really takes no effort after you figure out how to do it.Use a lighter rod with a med fast or fast tip 6.5 to 7 ft. Don't use fluoro line!

If you can make a small popper spit and walk correctly then this is the exact same technique.

This bait is also next to impossible to use in the wind or with chop on the water.Use it when it is dead calm. I have found much more success with this bait by just twitching it lightly 3-4 times then pausing.I call it the "silent assassin" A constant walk is not really necessary. And yes it catches toads too. :)
