Once the spawn begins, what happens when a cold front comes through. Do the males abandon the nests and head for deeper water or do they stay on the nest tough it out in the shallows.

It all depends on how bad --or how cold--it gets. A minor cold front will not affect males on the nest too badly but I remember a spawn where a MAJOR cold front came through and the males abandoned the nests.

Under severe circumstances the females can absorb her eggs and not spawn.

Frontal conditions are another link in the spawning chain, the spawn doesn't take place until almost all severe fronts are over.

The deeper the bass spawn the less the cold fronts affect them, however it takes longer for the eggs to hatch. Some years the recruitment of young bass is very low due to severe weather, other years are far better.

That is dead on! If a bad front does come in the female will move ( shallow water )off but she will come back to the nest. She will not wait for all fronts to pass, fish can't tell how many fronts are going to come in. Up here in Wisconsin we get fronts all the time spring up untill fall and the bass spawn just fine in between the fronts! I agree that bass in deep water that spawn are less affected by a front!
