April Smallmouth

Featured Replies

Anybody out there have any advise on smallmouth tactics this time of year??  I'm a largemouth fisherman that is attempting to get better at smallmouth fishing. Diamond Valley Lake here in California has some smallies in it but have only managed to catch a couple of males last year while bed fishing. Whatever advise you got.....I'm all ears...

Right now here in Oklahoma the smallmouth bite is great! The fish are very active and are moving in and out of shallow water. Catching quite a few on crankbaits, and catching a lot on jigs and skirted grubs in deep water. I always target rock banks, deep rock ledges and points, or a transition from rock to sand.

I think you'll probably find almost everything works this time of year. Here's a couple more suggestionns: jerkbaits, 4" lizards, single tail grubs and Gitzits (I especially like baby diaper yellow).

Thanks for the tips guys! Hey Road warrior. I'm assuming the baby diaper yellow color you are reffereing to is something similar to a pale chartruse color  ( I'm having visions of this tube that has  a yellowish, "urine" hue to it )???

It's basically a yellowish green. For some reason this color is particularly effective in clear water. If you can fish it with a jig head (traditional rig), that's what I would recommend .
