smallmouth at night?

Featured Replies

Do smallies feed during the night?  I have read that they infact do not, but then I have also read that they do activily feed at night.  I have not fished for smallies at night because I just read that they feed at night, so have you ever caught smallmouths at night?

I always catch smallies @ night. Its one of my favorite times to go. In fact, we have a club tournament every year thats a night tournament and its ALWAYS at a location that is a smallmouth fishery. Smallmouth fishing is EXCELLENT at night! Use whatever you would normally but adjust for night. Example = spinnerbaits(use black at night, both skirt and blade). I use tubes, finesse worms, crankbaits, grubs....all the same stuff I would throw during the day.

We night fish all summer long.  On average, we catch more smallies than largemouth in the night time hours.  (our lake has both and we catch both in the same areas)

Smallmouth primarily feed at night.Especially in the summer.Jigs and spinnerbaits work around here!

my favourite time to fish for smallies is at sundown, when its not quite day but its not quite night. It's around this time, i find, that the baitfish come closer to shore, and the smallmouth come =in to feed on shad for the night, then move back to deeper water at dawn (my theory is they dont like the heat). in my experience, the best lure to use is a topwater during the few minutes that the sun comes down and the smallies are on their way in...its just really worked for me!

Believe me, they feed at night. For sure!

Around here, you usually don't catch to many during the day this time of year but you catch some big ones  at night ;)
