If you're fast enough, you can throw back with the same lure and most of the time get the fish to hit again.  I say this because in the time that I sit one rod down, pick up another, make a lot of noise in the boat, and make the cast, that the fish will be long gone.  Other times, if the fish are missing the buzzbait, then I'll throw a skinny topwater like a Rapala Skitterpop or Storm Chug bug that moves a little slower and has a lot more hooks, or maybe even my Sammy knockoff.

Im with ABA I will immediately throw right back. I would rather throw back and make sure that the fish didnt just miss it than take the time to pick up another rod and throw something else. If the short strike or miss happens on a few occasions in a row I will than change to something else.

I've never done that for a smallie because all of my smallie fishing has been wading so I only take one rod. For largemouths though, i usually use a plastic like a tube or senko. For smallies, I would think maybe a minnow or tube would work well. I know Al Lindner uses soft minnow baits as a follow up for smallies.

I always keep a grub or plastic worm rigged on a stand-by rod. It takes 2 or 3 seconds to grab it up put the worm or grub in the water where the fish hit. I've caught more fish this way than by throwing the buzz bait or topwater back. I play the odds in this case, and the odds favor the worm or grub.

When fishing with a back boater we try to fish different baits and it is understood that if someone gets a fish on or has a miss the other cast as fast as possible to the spot. MANY times another bass will strike the second bait or the missed fish is still in the mood for lunch.

If you are throwing a buzzbait I am assuming you are on top? If fishing alone I would have a Spook or Sammie that I could chuck out and twitch mainly in place. This has worked better for me than anything.

I don't use buzz baits here much but with a walk the dog type lure I really prefer a weightless rig such as a senko wacky rigged or a fat ika to follow up a miss strike.  I have had greak luck with this style of fishing.  Lots of times my larger fish of the day comes this way.

Tight lines Scott

Usually my fishing partner will be working some sort of soft bait if im using a hard bait like a buzz bait, so ill have him go for the fish the second time around, he does the same for me when its the other way around, i usually have a bunch of rods rigged and id pitch a soft bait myself back if i could, in the ideal situation id like to have a lightly weighted darker colored grub on to get that smallie to committ

I have always found the best "come back" lure to be the bait you just got a strike on!

Whenever bass are hitting topwater, they will hit jerkbaits. A fluke (Slug-Go) or hard bait would be my suggestion.
