First smallie trip soon.  Need some advice.

Featured Replies

Guys,

On 4/7 I'll be going on my first smallie trip.  I'll be fishing either a small stream, creek or lake...I guess because my buddies and I will be fishing off a conoe.  So, the waters can't be that vast.

Here is what I am thinking so far.  Correct me if I'm wrong and please offer some suggestions.

-6'6" M and ML rods, fast action

-6 lb. test

-Rapala slashbaits, pointers, 4 inch. senkos, jigs and tubes

Anything else?  Will smallies take just about the same lures a largemouth will?

Thanks

I grew up on the st joe river in michigan busting smallies.  I like to use the Gary Yamamoto twintail skirted grub.  Smallies love them.  I had the best luck on watermelon with copper flakes, clear with copper flakes, and black with copper flakes.  Also dont be afraid to try tube jigs....

Good luck and enjoy!

Your equipment and lure selection will work well. I also recommend the GYCB Fat Ika, single tail grub and Hula Grub.

We need to know what general latitude or area that you are fishing to give more sound advice.  Water temperatures can be a big thang in helping you out. Generaly smallies are not very bait selective in small waters. Speed and depth could be issues as they related to temps.
