what lure for trolling??

Featured Replies

hey there, im 14 and my dad said we are going to make plans to go smally fishing on the shores of georgian bay. he told me the last time he did this, he was trolling with a Original Rapala Floating, and caught smally after smally, all around 2.5. 4 pounds, but i was wondering if you could recommend any good trolling baits, and what size/colour

any suggestion/opinion is GREAT!! :D ;D

Any grub like kalins, or gy single tail grubs are good for trolling. Northland tackle mimic minnow and slurpies swim shad and swim shiner with or without the spinner are good for both trolling and casting I use them in place of grubs for both smallmouth and walleyes. They also have a northland slurpies swim n grub.

Rapala original floaters, husky jerks, and similiar baits work good to. Spinnerbaits and swimbaits also will work.

As already said, 3" - 5" curly tailed grubs trolled behind a 1/8 oz. jig head will definitely put fish in the boat. However, you have to troll rather slow. Just fast enough for the tail start swirling regularly, yet fast enough to keep it just off the bottom. Don't forget the cardinal rules: Depth & Speed control is paramount!

If the bottom is rocky or snaggy, I'd recommend a small floating balsa bait, such as the Rapala. If it's not grabbing your jig all the time then stick with those. White or chartreuse are great colors. And if you go with the larger size Kalin grugs, try the smoke with black flake or green pumpkin. You'll do just fine! ;)

You might want to try trolling a spinner bait. I had great luck in Ontario on a white w/ red bleeding spinner bait.

Your dad had great luck with the Rapala. I would stick with that.

Good luck!

Number one rule in fishing... Don't change something that works :P

I've seen too many people change a lure while the one their using is working hehe. I'd start out with the same gameplan from the other outing and change as needed.

Try the Rapala Glass Rap.   It is a lure that is used in the Northwest by us to troll for smallies up here.  It can be fished at alot of different depth's depending on the amount of line put out behing the boat.  Fairly snagless in rock and produces fish.
