Catching Post Spawn Smallmouth

Featured Replies

I live in Kentucky and I fish a Lake with a lot of smallmouth. What is the best places to find the smallmouth after they spawn. Spawning is now over and I would like to find the small mouth. What are some good baits to use in post spawn for smallmouth. Thanks Travis.

Look for structure in deeper water 15 to 30 ft and use 3" tubes on a 3/16 head. Just drag the tube and keep it in contact with the bottom at all times.

What are some good color tubes to use this time of year for those deep stucture smallmouth. Thanks Travis

For colors, it can vary lake to lake, even in the same area.  Experiment with different colors on that deep structure that was mentioned.  Also ask someone who is having success on the lake what color is working for them if you can.

I like watermelon, black, black and blue, browns and deep reds for smallies (actually most of these work for them at ANY time).  T-rigging a craw trailer may work too, I am using that in the river right now and they seem to be nailing it.

Where:

Gravel bars, the first and second break off the

bars; primary points; humps, ledges, boulders

and rock piles; mussel beds and any isolated

hard bottom; bluffs against the wall and follow

it down.

Tackle:

Rage Tail Baby Craw, T-rigged (no jig);

RT Eeliminator and Lizard, C-rigged; Strike

King Red Eyed Shad with a little chartreuse;

Swarming Hornet, LFT Live Magic Shad trailer;

Ledgebuster 3/4 oz Single Willow Blade

Spinnerbait (chartreuse); 4" Slug-Go on a

dropshot rig and Keiteck Fat Swim Impact

4.8" or GYCB Swimming Senko.

If the water is clear, Lucky Craft Pointers,

Sebile Koolie Minnow and Megabass Ito

Vision 110. Fred caught a 6-3 lb smallmouth

last week at Pickwick on a Bandit 300. He

caught many more on the same lure!

p.s. Kentucky Lake is known as a "blue" lake.

Maybe it's the water, but blues and purples are

favored colors for soft plastics.
