Lucky Craft Pointer And Retrieve

Featured Replies

I recently got my first pointer last weekend... and lost it to a submerged tree. In the 30 or so casts I had it I realized that you can make this bait do quite a few different things. The biggest one I noticed is that this bait will actually turn around. What are some other tricks with this bait, how exactly do you get it to turn around, and what are some retrieves you guys like to use? Also, even though I didn't catch anything and basically lost 15 dollars in 15 minutes I plan on buying a few more. :)

I spent about 45 minutes trying to work the bait free before the line broke. I actually contemplated swimming for it but it was about 40 degrees out. Any recommendations on a lure retriever?

Getting the bait to turn can be done several different ways. One of my favorites is to give it a sharp tap on lightly slack line. Sometimes that will trigger a crushing hit. Amongst other things, you can make it roll almost sideways, you can give it upward taps with you rod tip rather than pointing down and it will dart up and to the side. You can keep the bait in a very small area working it very slowly with light taps with just a bit of slack in your line. Sometimes a gentle pull is what they want, where the bait is barely moving. That's the beauty of jerkbaits, it's all about cadence and technique. The lures have no appeal without the skill of the angler, so to speak. The just aren't effective baits to cast and retrieve, you have to create the action.

These are the lure retrievers I keep on the boat. I would say with the money they saved me in one year they would have to be worth there weight in gold! I have modified the one on the rope a little to make it work a little better. The one on the pole also aids in getting lures out of the trees when you go tree fishing. Those pointers are great so many diffrent ways to fish them sounds like your doing ok to me get you a new one and a lure retriever.

Yes thats the one I just added some extra chain it works good. I noticed some of the reviews were bad but I've never had a issue with mine I added the chain before I every took it out the first time just because I had lots of chain on my homemade one I used before up grading to this one.

You spend 45 minutes trying to get a Lucky Craft back? That's a long time, even for a Lucky Craft - or even a $30 Mega Bass for that matter. You need a lure retriever. I prefer the extendable poles over the other types. One word of caution - get a heavy duty one. A light one will break sooner and sooner or later you're going to break your lure retriever. I prefer the extendable poles because they work on overhead obstacles as well as under water ones.

That why your handle is Fishes in trees.:D

The pole is the best. I bought my 18' pole for $20 dollars. Jerkbaits, crankbaits, even plastics when I don't feel like re-tying. If you think about it, you just need to save 2-4 baits, depending on their price, before you pay for the retriever. No brainer. I try not to squirrel fish too often, but it does happen. But, i've saved the same 5 dollar DD-22 over 10 times in one day. That stuff adds up!

As for the jerkbait, they do work awesome. I have found that lighter # test line will give you more action. These guys work great in cold weather, but its also hard to beat them with a jerk-jerk-pause-rip once the bass come up near the shallows (pre-post spawn)

Lure retreivers don't work so great from shore. I have had both kinds linked above and have been dissatisfied with both.

My new method of getting snags out from shore (aside from swimming for the bait which I will do) is to let out about half as much line as you already have out and put open your bail or freespool your BC... Loop your line around a really stout branch. Heave that branch past your stuck lure. It will come out more times than not. I have saved many baits this way, the rest I get back by wading in after them... This method works better than any lure knocker I've ever tried, and even out does the bowstring method...

I don't know if it will help you but I'll tell how I taught my wife to fish one. She loves to dance and is really good at it so I put it in terms she could understand. Cast it out and reel a few times to get it down and then the dance begins 1-2 1-2-3 (jerk-jerk pause) repeat. She thought it was funny to put it that way but it worked for her and now she can fish a jerkbait pretty well in a little warmer water. I can't get it through that she has to pause longer in colder water but she still catches a few of the more aggressive fish in colder water.

Just a comment on lure retreiver sna dgettgin baits free. I own and use a telescoping lure retreiver sometims retreifing from the depths and sometimes from the heights!! I also have a lure knocker on a stout cord but last year at a tackle show I picked up a very simple lure retreiver and it is what I use first because it is so quick. It is about a 2 ounce weight with a large swivle molded into it. Unsap the swivel, snap it on the line and drop it in, it will run down to the lure and most of time it pops loose in a matter of seconds. If that doesn't work I switch to one of the others but this works 90 % of the time and doesnt take long at all.

X2... This is my go to method first too before getting the pole out. But, mine is a paper clip and egg sinker lol

I used to use something similar only mine was a spark plug. Worked pretty well and costs next to nothing.

Thanks for the replies, I can't wait to try some of those retrieves. I'm also going to try the E-Z Lure retriever. It looks like it will fit nicely in my backpack. I guess from the reviews on that retriever the winder breaks, but it seems like you can just hold the rope in your hand. I also don't have a problem swimming for lures, but a lake I fish frequently has zebra mussels.. I think I'll be alright as long as I don't try to climb out where there's a bunch of zebra mussels.
