Why Does My Line Look Like A Slinky?

Featured Replies

So I went fishing on Wednesday and left my rod in the car. It got pretty hot today and was in direct sunlight, so I do not know if that could have been the issue but it was fine on Wednesday and today it was terrible! I'm using Suffix elite #12 and before today, it was the had the least amount of memory I've seen in a line.

A while ago I got some KVD line conditioner from the man himself and was wondering if I should use that or is it possible that the heat has permanently done some damage? Also, how should I apply the line conditioner?

Both heat and UV light degrade nylon copolymer lines. Heating it on the spool and then cooling it increases spool memory. The line conditioner will help soften the line up. You can remove spool memory by letting out the line, engaging the reel and then and pulling on the end to stretch the memory out of it. The ideal thing would be to stretch the line, then soak some line conditioner into a small cloth and run the line through it while you spool the line back on the reel.

Fasten the line to something strong like a tree and pull but not enough to break the line. My prefered way is to hook a 5 pound smallie but the 5 pound smallies are not always cooperative.

Do it the easy way. Back when I thought Trilene Big Game line was the best stuff around I used to do this at the beginning of every trip.

Buy the biggest spinnerbait you can find. a 3/4oz with a big colorado blade would be the minimum I'd recommend.

Remove the skirt. Clamp a rubber core sinker to the hook shank to add more weight.

Cast it out, and crank it back fast. Don't try to muscle it out on the first cast. One easy cast and one muscle cast, with a high speed retrieve will do the trick. Keep the rod down to the side, and crank fast enough to put a good bend in the rod.

I've even caught a couple of fish doing this.

Just stretch it out on a good fish ;)

just use it, you might have some coily line at first, but after a couple fish or just enough use it will straighten itself out, i doubt the line is damaged or needs to be replaced...

I use Pline CXX and on the first few casts it looks like a curled phone cord lying on top of the water. After you fish it, stretch it, and get it wet, it'll straighten out and isn't a hindrance for me.

reading a artical in a fishing book if line comes of like a slinkey they say put spool on floor start putting line on reel if it starts to wrap around the rod tip stop turn line box over start again till line wraps around tip and so on. then strech it out like they say i have gone back to mono on a few of my rods i like the xl berkley mono in the flouracent color. and strech the heck out of it. some say you can use floura carbon line on a spinning rod. you talk about slinkey man this stuff is not good iam going back to extra limp berkley mono and powerpro

the heck with the rest of lines

switch to braid :P
