Recommended Posts

Traded my Chronarch 100B for 1 SX3600 Mag and 1 SX3600C both in like new condition, but so was my Shimano. I really love round reels.

why did you just buy a calcutta? Those are imo the finest round reels you can have. Built like tanks.

because not everyone is gaga for shimano reels...

I agree. After three lemon shimanos. I have given up on them. I just had a day old curado break on me yesterday. Took it back and got another Smoke instead. Im sure they make great reels. I just for the life of me cannot get a decent one.

How does the smoke handle as it's probably going to be my last BC for awhile?

Whereas I, on the other hand, have never had a quantum that wasn't a total piece. Opinions are like....well, yeah. Everyone has one and shouldn't be faulted for it.

Amazing how that works isnt it? You cant get a decent quantum and i cant get a decent shimano. Gotta love the irony of it.

The Smoke has been working very well for me. I have definately enjoyed it. It has very quickly become my favorite reel. Granted it took me a day or so to get it set up right for what i was throwing with it. I havent had the first problem out of it.

I have never had a quantum worth fishing with. I have never had a problem with my shimano. the two diawa's I have tried 1 broke, terrible grinding sound, the other still works but not as well as the shimano's when I worked at gander mountain we had more pflugers and pinnicale reels returned than anything else. I really have a hard time trying anything else. I will say that the abu garcia's while a bit hit and miss when they hit are amazing reels.

just my experience.

It is weird how that works. Had a Chronarch for 17 years that never had a single tune-up or a part replaced. LOL The first baitcaster (shimano) I ever owned sat at the bottom of my family lake for 13 years. I took it apart, cleaned it up, and it works fine. However, it sits on my shelf as a keep sake now.

I've never had a bad Shimano or Quantum. Maybe just lucky I guess.

It is kinda crazy, almost like we "will" ourselves into not having a good experience with a specific brand. It's like we've already decided that it's not going to work before we fish it. My brother swears by his Quantums. I can't say a thing bad about them, more that they just aren't a reel I prefer.

When I purchase a new reel I take it to a guy who services it via oil and greese.

I think reels that sit on shelves can lose oil and greese which can lead to problems.

I suggest you do the same with any reel you purchase.

I also have all reels serviced, oiled and greesed every two years.

By doing this it has cut down on problems other than for two Soltace 2000FE's which have a design flaw.

I have not decided it I want to send them back to Shimano so they can see the problem.

Oil and greese. If used properly your reels will serve you for many years. :)

Good advice. I always pull my new reels apart right out of the box. Clean the bearings and oil them correctly. I also remove the factory grease and re-do that. Very easy to do on bait casters.

I don't disagree, though I service all of my reels annually. If I'm in need of something more than what I am capable of I have a mechanic do it.

I don't think that they lose any lubricant on the shelf, I think the problem is that they're over lubricated from the factory. There should never be grease on a levelwind, for instance.

IMO there are a lot of very good reels in the 1 and 2 hundred $ range. Since no 2 people have exactly the same casting technique and preferences, everyone is going to see a reel from a different perspective.

I might have a problem with backlashing on a certain reel while a different person could take it right out of my hands and make it cast like a gem.

i have the same problem like everybody else... i cant find a shimano that will hold up and ive had em all darn near... citica's,curado's ,chrnoach's etc.... i take that back.. the calcutta is a beast and i wont throw another round reeel if it aint a calcutta.. and unlike everyone else the only reels that last for me are quantums.. everyone has something bad to say about em but from my experience they have been great .. i guess everyone has there own niche in reels
