5" Jaw-Jack Swimbaits with spinning gear?

Featured Replies

So, I'm finally getting on the bandwagon with soft swimbaits. Figured I'd start with the 5" Jaw-Jack Swimbaits because I know *** has some great quality baits and I have heard good things about these. I've done some research already in the operation and hooks needed.

My question is actually oriented around the rod and reel. Every article and thread I read that actually lists this information talks about a baitcaster and a MH-H rod. I do have a set-up like this, but I am very new to baitcasters and I'm still having trouble casting them. I'd like to be able to switch over to something I have confidence in. Has anyone set these up on a spinning combo and how well did it work for you? I know casting distance will not be as far. Do you think I might run into the bait twisting a lot in the water?

In the end trying it will be the best bet, but I'm going out onto a lake this weekend and I'm just trying to get my facts together before I go.   :D

You'll be fine as long as you use a rod that is rated for the lure weight and a heavier line (10-17lb). That is going to require a large size spinning reel but there is not problem with that. And I don't see why you wouldn't be able to cast as far with a spinning combo as a baitcaster. I'm not sure what you mean by twist in the water. If you mean line twist then no, there wouldn't be line twist because the lure doesn't rotate completely, it just kinda shimmies back and forth.

Good to hear and thanx for the reply. I assumed I wouldnt have much of a problem, but it's always nice to have someone back up that assumption when you are new to something.

My set-up spinning uses 12lb flouro with a 7' mh rod. I think I'll be set.

yeah, you should be fine. I've used 4" paddletails with 20lb braid and a Medium spinning setup. Smart? Probably not but it worked fine.
