Yep, he got a steal.

That old reel, while heavy and slow as molasses by today's standards (3.8:1 gear ratio, IIRC), is built like a tank and should provide reliable service for years with a yearly clean and lube. Parts and service are readily available, too. I'd pick up a spare line guide pawl to have on hand just in case.

Ambassaduer parts are surpirsingly widely available. They are reliable, perform well and are prime cadidates for upgrades. Some of the more rare models in good condition sell for a good buck, but even everyday use reels will get $30-$40. Good find!

These are still "fishable" reels. My Dad (88yo) recently hung up his "fishing spurs" and passed on to me his prized possession - an early-60s vintage Ambassadeur 5000. I cleaned/lubed it, put 4.7:1 gears in it, and now I'm fishing it occasionally as it nears 50 years in service. The dang thing will just about out-cast my modern low-profile BC reels - and this without a single bearing in the reel. As Dave said above - lots of upgrade possibilities for these reels too if one is so inclined.
