Lake Food Chain

Featured Replies

Hi,

How do fry (baby bass) survive what is the journey their life takes to become a big bass? Where are these baby bass located in the lake, how do they live, what do they do and are they eaten by other bass or just other species? Are they protected by their moms until a certain size? I don't know nothing about them always I've wondered what the lake food chain is like and how it operates if someone who knows could please describe the process a little I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

LWD

Once they hatch they kick it with dad until they are able to swim, then the fry school up and swim around near the nest while dad fights off predators until they grow about an inch.Yes, Dad eats a few sometimes. Out of all the thousands of eggs, supposedly only 5-10 grow beyond 10 inches. Then they assume the normal behavioral roll of a bass.

They stay in dense, shallow weed cover, if present. Usually you can find tons in shallow backwaters of your lake. You'll find many species of babies there - it's the lake nursery.

Baby bass or fry are part of the food chain and eaten by all larger predators including other bass. A very small percent survive the first year depending on the water level and cover available.
