Fishing In West Florida

Featured Replies

I'm new to fishing and love it, I go fishing in local ponds around my area and am sure there are plenty of fish in these ponds but cannot seem to catch any. Can anyone give me any tips, like whether to use a lure or a worm on a hook, ill take any tips or websites to buy bait that work great in ponds. Like I said i am new to fishing so i really appreciate any help, advice, and tips that are given to me.

welcome to the site David...follow roadwarrior's instructions. it's a great site.

Tampa's rough with fresh water, other then Lake Tarpon and local holes your probably better off light saltwater fishing for snook reds and tarpon.

I would take a little ride east to Kissimmmee. Toho, Istapoka.

I was up in Citrus County (Inverness, Floral City, Crystal River etc) on a business trip but of course had to cast a gaze toward some freshwater lakes up there. How is that little chain (Tsala Apopka, I think) that parallels the Withalacootchie River?. The Lake just east of Inverness, Henderson, looked nice from the road. And how is that river for bass. Just curious as I may have to drag the boat up there for my next trip.

I usually go fishing for red fish and snook as well but i cant get out to the bay everyday but i can get to the lake around my area everyday smile.gif

Just as a rule of thumb for any florida pond go as light of weight 1/8oz is the heaviest i like to use and junebug, red shad or black and blue rubber worms. go to your local wallmart and get wide gap hooks 4/0 in size I like Gamakatsu hooks and fish very very slow. Try to find any cover you can find to fish around.

Yea I just purchased Watermelon Seed Senkos and the next time I head up to wal-mart im going to get the special hooks. I have'nt had a catch in like a week so it pretty frustrating so hopefully I will get one soon to renew my spirit haha.

Buy a pack of Gambler ez's in watermelon red. They are a rubber swim bait that can be cast through and over hydrilla when hooked weedless. They will catch you some bass.

^^Very good advice here, key is very very slow. Purples and reds are good colors, the two mentioned are the best IMO.

If you are having trouble catching fish try buying shiners, they are live bait fish, they work great bass, pickerel, and crappie love em. It can get expensive though my girlfriend basically won't fish without them and around here they are anywhere from $6 to $10 a dozen and a dozen goes quick so I usually get 3 to 4.
