New Member Saying Hello But With Questions

Featured Replies

Hello, I am relatively new to fishing. I had a 5'6" light rod and I could land small mouth easily with texas rigged 4" tubes. It broke and I bought a 7' medium pflueger combo and I cant seem to land anything. Something will bite the same exact tube I had on my previous rod/reel and I cannot get the hook up. It will just fling out of the fish's mouth.

Maybe try a different hook, or set it home harder. I don't know what else to say, sorry.

I'm guessing your new rod is more "sensitive", and you're reacting to a bite too fast?

Btw, are you getting (detecting) more bites now?

It seems that a fish will take my lure, I will wait a second or two for it to take the bait in its mouth then i try to set the hook and it FLINGS out. Been using a 1/16th oz worm weight with a 4/0 EWG hook on 4" tubes texas rigged. Even though its supposed to be weedless I am getting caught on major weed clumps.

Are you skin hooking the tube? That helps a lot more than an exposed hook but the worm weight will pick up some weeds. It could be that you are getting bit by panfish or a dink and the bait is too big. I can't think of one answer to this. :confused50:

It's possible that like deep said you may just be feeling the bites sooner and the stiffer rod is going to move the bait faster than the light action rod you had. It is possible you may be feeling sunfish/small bass pecking at your bait that you didn't feel before with your other rod. Still I would probably try a different style plastic or color of tube. The fish may want the tube enough to peck at it but not enough to actually pick it up, something a slight tweak may solve.

Welcome to the forum, you're going to find all sorts of knowledge here.

To your problem, did you consider going back to another light action rod? It's easier to compare apples to apples than apples to oranges. Someday soon, you will run across a gentleman named Catt, and he may repeat some very sage advice of his; "If you use the same tactics, you'll only get the same results" <or close to that>.

If you were happy with your results, then maybe using the same tactics and tackle is your answer.

Thank you for the advice and welcomes.

I went out tonight with a different plan. I put away the tubes and bought two packages of zoom baby brush hogs. One pack watermelon red, the other pack green pumpkin. I tried a bunch of combos until weightless texas rigged green pumpkin started to hit.

To my original question, I believe that I was just being nibbled by sunfish.
