The Bluegill Color Thread

Featured Replies

Have you ever thought about how many different bluegill patterns there are out there? There are hundreds of them, and while they each represent the same fish species, no two are identical. I thought it might be interesting to see a bunch of different painters versions of the same pattern in one thread, so if you paint a bluegill pattern, post a pic of it here!

I'll start the ball rolling with four of my own:

Dave, I'm loving that pattern. I think gills give off that greyish look when not in direct sunlight. IMO, even though the other colors pop more, your pattern is the most realistic one. GJDM

thanks, i've noticed this too. it seems like baby gills are almost always just an iridescent silver with a greenish cast. that's what i was going for with this one.

I hate painting blue gill patterns, mainly because I'm never happy with the finished bait. Here are a few of the blue gills I've painted recently.

This one is more of a blend of bluegill and firetiger, but it ended up being one of my favorites:

A little cover bait I carved up a few years ago:

Big Bass Man: Do you sell lures painted like that? If not, how much would you want for one?

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Senko_77, most of the bluegills I see in the water have much more subdued colors than the bluegills I posted. The bluegill in the fourth pic I posted is my latest attempt, and I tried to tone down the colors and go for a bait that is more silver overall.

One reason I paint brightly colored bluegill patterns is because bright colors are more attractive to fishermen than duller, more realistic colors.wink.gif

I really like all of the bluegills that have been posted so far. Keep em' coming!

Ben

Ben, here are few more gills. Couple of these are painted over foil.

Nice looking spinnerbait MonteSS.

Big M, those are some very nice patterns there, particularly the lighter version.cool.gif

MonteSS, that's a very good looking spinnerbait.

All painting is hard for me but the blue gill pattern, seems to evade my expertise.

Not one that I painted myself, but one that was painted for me by BB Lures out of Kentucky...

These are what I have come up with, but I have more ideas and hopefully some better brush control. When I get some time I need to get back into the booth!

ToledoEF, glad to see you posting some of your work. Nothing wrong with those patterns; the whole point of this thread is to get a bunch of different takes on the bluegill pattern.
