Got Skunked...again

Featured Replies

So ive been fishing this lake right by my house and it is all hydrilla from top to botom with exceptions of a few small areas, I must have tried 10 different plastics and every jig and frog and grub I had in my tackle bag. I saw about 12 nice bass come and check my bait out and get right behind it but they just dont want anything, this is the 4th consecutive day I have gotten skunked there! Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!:(

If you get the chance try getting out there earlier. Those fish should be more compliant in the morning.

Dont give up sooner or later youll find something that works amidst the seemingly endless array of lures out there. Youll catch em! :)

2 suggestions. have you tried punching through the hydrilla with heavy jigs or pegged t-rigs? the fact that you can see the bass suggests you are fishing in open water. especially during the hot part of the day, there will be fish holed up in the thickest vegetation. dropping something on their head is a sure way to get bit. the other suggestion that i would make is try fishing faster baits like a rage shad or rage toad accross the top. fast presentations will often force a bass to commit since they don't have a chance to study the bait.

I usually try and pull top water as slow as I can, but if I get short strikes, or the rare occasion I can see them follow, ill burn it back. They might not go for it, but if they do they have to be serious about it, which usually leads to a fish on the line.

I would also try a spinnerbait if your having a problem with the grass maybe you that through without picking up much grass if any at all. Other that just have to keep at it. If was me I would be tossing out a chatter I had good luck with that in grass. I do do still pick up grass but that's one of my go to from land. Only thing seem to work for me.

Though you tried other baits and plastics have you tried different approaches with them?, Slower retrieve, maybe pause at times?

You could try topwater like a spook type lure. My brother has luck with my Blue gill Skitter Walk by Rapala or try a Jitter bug?

Unweighted pink trick worm on a spinning rig with 8 pound test fluoro line.

Wacky Senko dragged across top of grass.

Try the trick worm ASAP.

If the bass are under the grass then try to find an open hole and drop your Texas rigged bait into it, jigging it a few times. Fluke, baby brush hog, six-inch finesse worm, trick worm, Rage Tail craw.

Let us know how you do. ;)

lots of good advice on here - man I hate the skunk!! Reminds me of trying to catch stripers out of the California aqueduct :(

I really agree with the suggestions to try around dawn or dusk, and also to punch the heavy vegetation if you have to fish in the middle of the day. Look for shaded areas and ambush points and really try to focus on what the bass may be eating and how they are feeding. Vary your retrieve speed/style, where in the water column you're fishing and the size of the baits you're using. Color too!

Good luck keep us updated I'm sure someone will end up bouncing an idea off you that works. Hope you get bit!!
