Spinnerbaits/buzzbaits with braid?

Featured Replies

I was fishing frogs yesterday and all the rods I brought with me had braid on them. Well, towards evening the frog bite died (predictably) so I decided to tie on a buzzzbait and fish the grass edges. To make a long story short, I ended up catching several quality fish on the buzzbait and I hooked every bass that blew up on it (which doesn't happen often). Maybe they were just more agressive and were eating the buzzbait better that day but it seemed to me that it was a lot easier to get a good hookset in 'em with the braided line. I'm thinking about getting some 20lb powerpro and putting it on my spinnerbait/buzzbait rod. So here are my questions: Is there any disadvantage with using braid for spinnerbaits or buzzbaits? Is the lack of stretch going to be an issue? And finally, will the braid be a problem in clear water? Opinions???

I have used 30# PP on spinner and buzz baits for quite a while.  You can seem to feel a bass looking at the bait.  ;D  I'd way much rather have it for those applications than any other line I have ever used.

The only drawback for me is the hook set.  I have really had to watch that and have even gone to rods with less power to help keep from ripping their lips off.

Seems like you answered your own question there....  at least it warrants another day or two of experimenting to see if it's for you.

I prefer heavy mono for buzzbaits but i have used braid and its fine its just my personal preference to use mono. I don't use braid with spinnerbaits, I personally like a bit of stretch(CXX or Yozuri Hybrid) but it very much varies on personal preference.

I like 40- to 65-pound Superline for Spinners and Buzzers. You will need to go down in rod power. My former river Smallie spinnerbait rod was MH, but now I use 40-pound test braid (10-pound diameter) and use a medium rod. Better. Never lose fish, even in the nastiest timber.

I use braid for all my spinnerbait and buzzbait fishing.  I feel like the number of fish that I don't stick (because I am prone to setting the hook too soon) is more than offset by the number of fish that don't get off because I got a better set.  It also helps me IMHO lose fewer lures because I can retrieve snags better than with mono.
