Punching Mats = 5/0 Trokar Flipping hook. (Untill Gamakatsu solves the barb issues on there flipping hook)

Any other time = 4/0 Gamakatsu EWG Superline w/ RI 4.20 Sweet Beavers or a 2/0 Gamakatsu EWG Superline w/ RI Smallie Beavers.

I'm with ww2farmer except I don't use the smallie beavers on a T-rig, just a shakeyhead. For the bigger beaver baits a 4/0 Gamakatsu EWG superline hook works great for me!

What barb issues?

Thanks guys! I use the Gamakatsu EWG Superline also. I was pitching thick reed edges last time and the point would hang up. When I skinned the point, I was missing every fish that hit. So, I tried the offset shank 5/0's that I had and those were not a good idea at all. I'll try those flipping hooks and see how that goes.

Very curious. I was thinking about trying these out.

After a fish or two the wire barb they use either falls out of the wrap they use, or the whole thing sides down the hook shank. I hade high hopes for this hook, and they hook it self is great, but the barb stinks. I am not a fan of paying $10 for the Trokars, as I don't think they are as good of a hook, but the barb stays put.

Iv hard the barb issues as well but I just slide it up and take a lighter to it and it fixes the problem iv also thought about just putting new shrink wrap on it. Iv noticed its also worse on hot days iv pulled my hooks out of me car to hit a spot to find them slide down and loose so I pull em up and either dunk them in water or spit and it siezes up and holds.

I use the gami's that are sold by paycheck baits and you have to set your own barb. Sounds like you just need to hit it with a lighter real quick and the problem is solved.

OR, I can open up the pack and use the Trokar's as is no need for a lighter or any farting around with sub-par barbs. Gamakatsu knows of the problem, and I have been told is working on it. I see Strike King has a new flipping hook, maybe I'll try those.

I've been using the Owner "spring on shank" for years and it's got a huge gap for really stickin' them. The hook is a 3X wire that never bends.

This hook has always sort of flown under the radar for some reason.

I use the Gami's, I have had the problem with the barb but it isn't a real big problem for me. A dab of superglue and I can put the barb where I want it (I feel like its too high up anyways), and I'm back to fishing.

They are very sharp and I have yet to lose a fish after sticking them with this hook. I mostly use the 3/0, but do carry 4/0's and 5/0's. Just haven't seen a need for the thicker/larger hooks yet, but I'm not catching anything much bigger than 5 pounds up here in Michigan so far this year.
