Quick question..

I was looking closely at my Avid this weekend and noticed some rust under the wrap of the first guide on the rod. The guide and legs are stable with no wiggle and I do not see any cracking in the wrap or the flex coat.

Is there anything I can do about this? Is it cosmetic now and will become a structural issue later?

I know I can always return it for service, but prefer not to part with it for any extended period of time.

Any insight welcome.

It's hard to say without seeing it for myself. Whe you say "...under the wrap..." do you mean under the actual thread, or the epoxy coating? As long as the epoxy finish is not cracked or peeling and the guide seems sturdy this will likely remain a cosmetic issue. Just keep an eye on it. Regular inspection of rods is a good practice anyway and it sounds like you were doing just that.

If the guide foot is rough or damaged where it rides on the blank then the blank may be compromised over time. Replacing the guide should cost <$20. I'm about 80 mi from you if you decide to replace it, I could meet half way.

I inspected it under better light with a magnifying glass and the finish does have a hairline crack.

So, although the upper leg is stable, it will degrade over time. You're only 60 miles away and I would not mind taking a ride out your way with the husband.

We just finished some winterization on the rod and filled the cork when I noticed the rust getting worse.
