Cranking Ratio ?

Featured Replies

Hey is the 5:4.1 Ratio for just deep cranking or all around cranking ? like 6-8 ft diving cranks?

That ratio I would call a medium cranking reel. If you want to go real deep then you need a 3.8:1 so it doesn't work you to death.

I use 6:3:1 for the majority of my cranking applications. I use a 5:4:1 or a 5:3:1 ratio when I'm throwing my 5xd's and 6xd's. It relieves a ton of pressure on your arms, hands, and wrists if you are bombing those deep divers for long periods of time. But it can be an all around cranking reel. You can use that gear ratio for all cranking purposes and it will do a very good job.

I had the same question in my head, this thread was made at the right time

The lower gear ratio is most noticeable and beneficial when deep cranking but won't hinder the shallower cranks. Check IPT when comparing reels with different ratios since that is truest measure of line pick up speed.

Double that advice for spinners, since spool circumferences can vary wildly between brands.

x3. IPT (inches per turn) is more important than gear ratio. It is not "one size fits all" when it comes to different companies, where any company could manufacture a 6.3:1 reel... Shimano's bantam reels had a 6.2:1 gear ratio, just like the newer ones. The bantams had 22 IPT, the newer stuff has 26 IPT...
