Fluke fishing

Featured Replies

I have searched older topics regarding Flukes but didn't come across anything regarding hooks.  My question is:  What size hooks are you all using for fishing Flukes?

I am using EWG Gammies in 3 or 4 size.  My problem is that this causes an extremely slow sink rate.  I want to get it down a bit deeper, quicker.  Are you all using any other types of weights etc or heavier hooks to quicken the fall?

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions as always.

You can use a weighted hook or you can use a nail weight inserted in the bait to increase the rate of fall.

I wrap a little lead tape (used for fly fishing with nymphs) or soldering wire wraped around the belly of the hook.  Its cheap and you can really adjust the weight to your needs.  :)

for hooks I like the Gammie G-Lock in 3/0 or 4/0

I use Mustad 4/0 1/8 oz keel weighted hooks.  picked up 50 of them on ebay for 22 dollars.

weightless, t-rigged, split-shot, jighead or keel-weighted hook. All will work sometime.

I use both Salty Super Flukes and Yum Houdini Shads. The Yum baits have been better this year, and last year.

I fish them unweighted on a 4/0 EWG almost all of the time.

Want a little quicker drop, use a superline hook

faster yet, split-shot

faster yet, keel weighted hook.

fish on the bottom, jighead or t-rig.

We use 5/0 EWG superline hooks on all 5" or 6" flukes and sometimes go to a 6/0 if extra weight is desirable.  We rarely need a fluke to go deeper than about 3', so this has worked very well for us.  YUM Houdini Shads and Lake Fork Magic Shads have been the 2 best producers for the last several years...they both have very nice tail action on the drop.

I also find with the keel weighted hooks, it helps keep the fluke from spinning on quicker retreives.

keel weighted hook in 4/0.  less line twist is also nice.

If you don't want to spend the $$ for weighted hooks use a nail inserted into the body of the fluke

Pinch a split shot about a 12-18" from the knot.  Will help sink rate and gives the fluke extremely erratic action
