Micro Guides, Leaders

Featured Replies

Today I tied up a leader on my 65# braid and noticed it hangs in the micro guides sometimes. I use the slimmest line to line knot I know, the modified albright. Any suggestions?

Also, what # fluro should I be using with 65# braid? I was using 17# today, too much?

Fore go a line to leader knot, use a swivel to attach your leader. I only tie on leaders for specific species, lmb are not one of them.

I was wondering why you're fishing such heavy line?? The only time I go up that high with braided line is when Im throwing Frogs or punching jigs or weighted creature baits into the heaviest slop I can find, and even then I use 50lb power pro tied straight to the lure. Any other time I'm using braid for LMB I stick with 10lb power pro with a really small ball bearing swivel, usually #12 (16lb test), to a 12 lb 100% flouro leader. 10lb braid will give you plenty of power for fighting large & smallmouth, plus your casts will be about a mile longer.

If you really need a leader try a FG Knot or a GT Knot.

You need sometime to tie it right but its strong and low profile enough to slide thru the guides which minimal hanging.

Does your rod have #3, or #4 line guides? If it has #3 guides that is your problem.

It was my first time buying braid, so I was afraid the smaller diameter would give me trouble casting, so I just went with 12lb equivalent.

Take a look at your knot and be sure the tag ends are trimmed off closely. I have had mono tag ends catch if not trimmed since they point toward the guide when casting. A size 4 guide should pass your connections without too much problem. Unless abbrasion is a concern like when fishing zebra mussel beds tying direct is your best bet.

I use 40# Samuari with 20# XPS fluorocarbon leader for finesse fishing. I use the leader for weight to make the braid sink as part of the presentation. My connection knot is the Uni-Uni Knot with 6 turns on both lines. I have no problem with the micros on a Ducket rod. It casts just a well as it does on other rods with larger guides. I cut the knot's tag end flush with the knots. Thousands of caught bass indicates to me that it works very well.
