well, i have recently came into ALOT of old spinnerbaits and buzzbaits and was wondering what tricks you guys use to reskirt them. for my own use i normally just buy expensive all in one skirts you know and slip them on but in this case repairing all these things would be too expensive. there are way too many to keep really and i am considering giving them out to people or maybe selling them at a yard sale or something.

they came with some skirt material and a tool that looked like a pair of pliers that i suppose you put the collar on with but it had no collars.

what collars do you guys like? alternatives? tricks to make them stay put.. etc.???

I bought some lumaflex skirt material.  Cut a piece of cardboard to the size you want each strand to be.  Wrap the lumaflex around the cardboard to desired # of strands.  Take a razor and slice down each side, put a collar in the middle and slide it on.  Wacky-Rig tool can help with collars also or just put it on a pair of needle nose pliers.  You can also wire tie them on if you like.  Per Glenn's recommendation I just use white lumaflex and dye it as necessary with JJ's Magic.

Don't worry about new skirts...just box them up and send them my way, I'll get rid of them for ya

im just not used to putting it on. i normally buy all in one skirts like strike king perfect skirts or whatever.. and havent really laid out my own skirt strand by strand before. i think i have a plan but would still like to hear suggestions!

no no... i have skirt material.

Just go to Menards, Home Depot, Lowes, etc. and pick up a $.99 package of 100 4" black cable ties. Much easier than using collars.

is the skirt material still in sections of say 10-- 12 strands each section

or are they single thin strands that have been seperated?

the material is like 20 strands with a solid space then more strands wrapped around a card. not seperated. my plan was to cut it to length, put the skirt facing the head of the bait,wrapping it around... and then glue the flat part of the skirt down. then i was going to just roll the collar around the hook and over the keeper and it should roll onto the flat part of the skirt nicely. this i assume should make the skirt bloom out pretty well when its moving forward.

i tried this but didnt have the super glue and elmers just wasnt holding it. lol.... at all. got frustrated and gave up tonight.

plain old small zip ties work well!!!

my cuz "fly tied" a skirt on this spinnerbait that i got out of a dollar bin.

it's been holding up fine.

that looks cool as all hell.

so you got some collars or bands.?

make the skirt 1st. then put it on the bait.

if you have the stretchable bands..

you need to use 2 sections of skirt.. ( some guys use more or less )

20 strands each.. total apx. 40 strands..

lay 2 separate sections of 20 strands each on top of each other flat

on the table, now you have 40 strands.

the collar goes near the center of the strands.

so when it blooms back when you reteive it

your getting 80 strands blooming back.

if you are using a zip strip..

1st lay the zip down..

then lay 1- 20 strand skirt section on it near center of skirt

then lay bait on the 1st section of skirt w/ zip under it . ( make sure the bait is laying rite where the zip goes when you zip it.0

then lay 2nd section of skirt on top of the bait.

then zip um all together.

and go fish.

Where did you pick up the lumaflex?

Bought a 1/4# spool from the living rubber company for like $30

band the center of 6" - 8"  sections.

that gives you 3"-4"  skirts after they bloom back.

Go to fishingskirts.com - they have a tool to put the strands in and put the band around.  Take a look at the video on the home page.  The tool is only a couple of dollars and they sell the bands as well.
