What Should I Use?

Featured Replies

I fish in smallish ponds in Georgia around my house and I'm wondering what would work the best. I've had some luck on a baby brush hog and a little rooster tail. What should I be using and what colors? The ponds aren't very deep and have a soft mud bottom or weeds.

Don't be afraid of a chatterbait or spinnerbait. I like colors like ghost shad or white/ chartreuse!!

When I fish small ponds a 3/8 chatterbait is all I really throw. I just walk the bank and fan cast, while trying different retreives.

Topwater baits work well for a pond i fish. Try some pop R's and zara spooks to call the big girls up. Also i have seen a pond yet that didn't have frogs in it so i would give those a try also.

I just might have to try frogs on the small ponds I fish at times.

Start with jigs. I choose my colors based off water conditions - dingier/stained water you want a darker color or anything with a lot of contrast. Visa versa, pick a natural color in clearer waters. If you are fishing weedy conditions, throw a grass jig head.

Personally, for all around conditions, my favorite jig is a NorthStar 3/8 oz Premier Jig in Missouri Craw.

Another great option are for fishing over weeds in shallow water are paddle tail frogs...same colors apply to frog fishing as already stated.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm headed up to bass pro shop later this week and this will be a great help

I threw I white shad 3/8 oz chatterbait and don't get anything. I'll keep tryin it though.

If you can't catch a bass out of a pond on a 5" wacky rigged senko, there are no fish in that pond.
