Damages Skeg

Featured Replies

Need help locating a [manufacture/part number] skeg protector for a 2003 Evinrude 225 H.O. Bombardier FICHT engine. Tip of the skeg recently broke off.

My engine type is not listed on the Megaware (keelguard) web site, and I've spoken with the folk at Skeggard, and because of something to do with cavitations issues they don't provide products for High Output engines.

I've attached a picture of the damaged skeg and any help would be appreciated.

You could pull the lower unit off and have a new skeg welded on. Runs around $200-250 if done that way thru a marine dealer and looks like new..

yeah, that could be tig welded real easy. Be sure the guy who deos it knows to put it in water with the skag stickign out; otherwise the heat might melt your seals.

Another option - JB Weld. It really DOES work; once you sand it down nd paint it you wont be able to tell. Not as strong as welded but you can do it yourself easily.

Sorry to threadjack, but how bad would it be if you didnt fix it. What does a broken skeg cause?

The skeg protects the prop. I've been on a boat and seen this happen. No damage to the prop because the motor tripped up before the skeg broke off. If the prop took the hit it would have been damaged and likely caused damage to the prop shaft and the innards of the lower unit.

File that down so no rough edges and forget it. That little bit won't hurt a thing.

I agree!!! I have a chunk out of mine...looks like someone took a bite out of it. Consider it a battle wound!!

You just described mine... As long as it wont effect preformance, i guess it can wait on a fix. The fix would probably be more than the actual motor is worth ('84 150 hp Mercury black max)

I had broken skeg of my 70 HP merc about 13 years ago. Never got to use or fish the 88 tracker much so I still have the motor/ boat and use it. I had a replacement welded on for about $150 at the time. The repair was made with out pulling the lower unit. Well not long after mayby 2 years latter I let my teenage son and his budy use the boat while on a camping trip in Maine. They went out and came back with a broken skeg again. So now it is still broke but it works ok after filling and straightening what was left. So i chock that up as a lesson learned. Not pretty looking but it woerks ok the way it is.

Ditto- You can sand and paint if you want it to look good but ok as is.................Al
