How do you put your jig trailers on?

Featured Replies

Do you put your jig trailers on by "threading" them on the hook (so the body of the trailer can't move, just the claws can move), or by just placeing them on the hook so the body of the trailer can move (side to side) as well as the claws. I use sweet beavers and paca chunks. Can someone please give me some advise, I am trying to learn how to use jigs and have already read links that people have posted on this site. Just trying to get advise on things not fully covered by the articals. Thanks.

The answer, as usual, it depends - some times I want a smaller profile and then I thread my chunk style trailers on - some times I want a larger profile and then I just hook them on - also, If I am using a crawl-type trailer (chigger craw for example) I will always thread them on.

As always, you just gotta 'speriment.

My response would be it doesn't matter. The majority of the time I hook them center of the "head" of the trailer---I don't want to do anything to impede movement of the trailer. That said I have caught fish hooking a 5" senko wacky behind a strike king pro jig--go figure! 8-)

The answer for me depends on the trailer. I'm not all to concerned about the profile or makign the bait shorter or longer. Jigs are primarily a reaction bait for me so fall rate is just about the only large concern.

When i was learning to fish jigs, I had two guys teaching me. One used a craw threaded on his hook while the other used a pork chunk hooked through the head. When I'd ask them why, they would simply say "Thats how I like it".

Simply put, find a jig trailer that you like and think will catch a fish and fish it for a day. Throw it in the ugly stuff and you might be surprised at what you find.  :(

While rate of fall is extremely important so is profile :(

I thread grubs and craws and hook chunks.

x2.  Most of the time I do this.  Sometimes I will cut craws and make them a chunk so the claws a have a bigger profile.

I have always threaded mine. I also feel the profile is important.

I usually thread mine, I fish a lot of clear water and it gives me more confidence.
