It probably has something stuck in there so it's bodies natural defenses encased it like that to keep it from causing further damage. I've seen bass with old rusty hooks stuck in them that had big knots all around the hook that looked like that. Might be a piece of a stick or something that it ran into chasing a baitfish.
Is it spring yet??
