Once the sun goes down I'll usually tie on one of the below:
Jig - Big and Black usually with a big black worm trailer
Hollow Body Frog
Rage Toad or Cane Toad
Smoking Rooster
Black Jointed Jitterbug.

However, the other night I was doing well on a gold lipless.

  • Favorite Lake or River:The Yampa River, Colorado's best smallmouth fishery. Lots of 2 - 4 pound, obese bronze bombers in this river. Connected Lakes is my favorite lake, just a group of small gravel pits, no bigger than 100 acres. No monsters, but lots of 2 - 5 pound largemouths and the odd 6 - 7.

Big buzzbait with a black skirt, big single blade colorado with black blade and skirt, or a jitterbug.

Are you talking about the time just before dusk or after sunset? I've done a fair amount of fishing after sunset in the summer and early fall, mostly between 9 and midnight. Often the bite would not pick up until 30-45 minutes after sunset. I like to fish slow and big at night but I know guys who say they do well with senkos. A black buzzbait, buzzjet, and a Gambler Swim Blade are some of my favorites.

The fishing can be excellent, especially for larger fish, but it isn't always the case. My advice is to stick with it and stay a bit later if the bite is slow.

I use the same lures/worms at night as I do in the day. Last night I was throwing a 1/2 chrome with blue top rattle trap and flat out whacked'em.

A black Jitterbug was my favorite until recently when I tried a black spinnerbait just like the one mentioned above.
