A close friend of mine and myself have been making an hour trip to these old sand mines recently, mainly for the awesome topwater action. Specifically, Scum Frogs. The first time we went there, there was a nice mat of all kinds of veggies mixed together with little open pockets now and then, starting at the shore and out 20-40ft in some places. With 2ft of gin clear water at shore and dropping quickly in spots to 20' or more. It was frogging heaven! The problem is almost all of the scum is gone. The water is low and stirred up alot. The banks are somewhat steep so Im guessing the clarity issues are from run off... As far as the disappearing veggies, Im not sure. Maybe a combo of hot temps and no rain?? Will my new found paradise bounce back this season?

Hmm. I guess this is a "fishing report" since it was moved here. Although it wasnt really a question/report on fish or fishing, but a question about vegetation...oh well.

If the water is low it's possible all the spots the weeds would normally grow are on the bank. The stirred up water makes it harder for light to penetrate and that could be part of the issue as well.
Is it spring yet??

Thx Blue. Its not that low. Its only 6-10" low. It gets deep quick. Most of the weeds are 6-12' long. Some of the submergent weeds are still around but 95% of the scum is gone...

From a human perspective, they're like Twinkies.

Man, it sounds like they have been poisoned to me. I have the same issues with Germantown Parks.
The fishing was 10X better when we had more cover.

The whole place is surrounded by a state park. I need to contact the DNR there and see what they think. Its really a big let down. I still have a great time there and catch fish. Even big ones. Its just not the amount of action as before. Not even close... Great fishing spots around here (east central iowa) are too rare to lose one.
