Now a lawyer is involved.......geez. I am glad that fish finally won.

Knoted rope..would it suffice for a ladder.
Been thinking about a safety ladder to get back in the boat if I fell out. Would a thick knotted rope off the back of the boat be enough to aid in getting you back in?? Dang ladders are stupid expensive. Talking about an aluminum Jon boat. Is the back of the boat the best place to try to climb back in??

simple aluminum gunwale repair advice needed
I think I am just going to put a nice cleat on the gunwale. The underside is flat. I can just put a 1/4" thick piece of aluminum under there and the cleat will span the crack. A bolt through both sides of the cleat down through the gunwale into the aluminum will hold it together and give me something to tie stuff to.

Is this boat a steal?

simple aluminum gunwale repair advice needed
Found an old Grumman rowboat. There is a crack in the gunwale (top edge). What can I use to reinforce this. All I need is a short length of something that would fit over the edge and then be tightened by rivet or screwed down. Seems like a simple repair, but I cannot find any aluminum extrusion that can be used for this repair. Anyone have a tip for repairing/reinforcing an edge crack like this. Thanks

How far can bass see?
When your slow moving a worm on the bottom and the fish comes up to your worm to have a look, it sees every detail very clearly, even in low light. So says the Bill Murphy book. When the lure is blasting past them, a lot of it is reaction so they may only catch a glimpse but they quickly catch up to the bait and vision AND smell come into play. In short, they have good vision.

inflatable
You buy an inflatable for the very reason that has the ability to deflate. If you want a metal boat, get a metal boat. If you want to be able to deflate the boat and fold it up and put it in your car trunk then get that. I would recommend having both...hard side boat and an inflatable for situations where you need it. Go to Craigslist and look for the Sea Eagle boats. They are incredible. Here is an ad I just found. http://nh.craigslist.org/boa/992823267.html If you are out in an inflatable, ALWAYS be prepared for the puncture to happen. Keep a puncture repair kit and a pump. I like my little 6 foot Sea Eagle because I can put it on my shoulder and walk down to lakes that are not accessible to boat trailers.

Oars/orlocks/rowing! Don't laugh.
Thank you for the info. That looks like what I need!

Oars/orlocks/rowing! Don't laugh.
My vhull Jon boat has a set of oarlock mountings on it. All I need is the oarlocks (cheap on Ebay) and some oars for some rowing. What do I look for in oars for a boat like this. Mostly I see paddles with the flat area on top so you can insert the paddle in the water and use the palm of your hand to "push" the paddle through the water. With rowing, do I need to look for a round handle oar? I have a great spot to do some rowing while I fish and gosh do I need the excersize!!!

Lake Allatoona (PIC)
Nice fish. In regards to Weiss. What is the best and safest way to boat on that lake? If you use a smaller moter like 10-15 hp on a jon boat and just put-put around would you still run the risk of tearing up a motor. Are you mainly talking about guys blasting around in fast bass boats? I am going to start fishing that lake and just wanted some info.

High School Principal Killed in Boating Accident
This is very sad, but the tough words about no PFDs is needed. This is what can and does happen. Running down a river in the dark at enough speed to tear the hull from one end to the other and no PFD.........no excuse for that. Poor judgement, and they traded their chance for surviving as a result of choosing not to wear one. So sorry for the families.

Remember Safety
I could have never done that. Amazing. Just got a boat. I am going to get me some kind of boat ladder to hang off the back of it. My brother tells me of an incident where one of the guys fell in with the temps down about freezing and the water temps VERY cold. They got the guy back in the boat and then they sandwiched him between them to keep him warm till they got back to the ramp and to the truck where there were dry clothes. After he changed and spent some time in the warm truck, they were back out fishing again!

Found a nice old Boat
Been looking hard on Craigslist. Paid off. Found a 14ft Alumacraft model T14V with a 15hp Johnson, trailer, trolling motor, other stuff. $400. If you look closely you will see that rain water had collected in the bottom...I guess if it won't leak out...it won't leak in!! I am happy.

I might have had a Georgia state record tonight............
It was. I was sore as heck the next day and had red rings on my chest where I pushed in the butt of the rod and just hung on.

Is a V hull jon boat any more stable than a flatbottom?
Looking into buying an aluminum Jon boat. There are bunches of them on Craigslist. Is a V hull any more stable in the water than a comparable width flat bottom??

I might have had a Georgia state record tonight............
but the Carp was fouled hooked! Took me about 2 hours to get it to the bank! Weighed between 35-40lbs. When I saw that the plug I was casting was embeded in the top of the fishes tail, I did not make the effort to get in the water to get it out. It was dark and the water was just too cold. I could not get my hand around the fishes tail to drag it out anyway it was so big!! I had seen these giant carp in the neighborhood lake I fish. Just massive. I was casting about sundown and all of a sudden the lure stopped and just started slowly pulling off away from me. I only had 10lb line and a small reel with 65 yards on it and a modest rod. I had a great time getting the fish to the bank. It would just lumber down and stay on the bottom. I could not even budge it, so it did not actually do much fighting. Sort of like trying to raise up a log!! Sure was somthing though to hear the drag singing and line pulling out. Wore my right arm slap out!!! If the fish had been caught in the mouth as a record has to be, I would have gotten him up on the bank somehow without damaging it. I was able to unhook the plug and send it on its way with no problem.

inflatable PFD's - Mustang, Sospenders, etc.
I bought two auto inflate pfd vests at Walmart a year or so ago. Make a long story short, they saved my and my sons' life. I will never go anywhere near the water with out one, or let him. The sound of that cartridge going off is something I will never forget, and seeing his face next to me when we surfaced was something I will never forget. Don't even flinch at the price of them. It is the best money you could ever spend.

I was this close -->| |<-- to getting my boat
If you have cash, you are in the drivers seat in this economy. Unfortunate for many, there will be lot's of boats for sale as people need to raise money for expenses. I am already seeing this in looking at all sorts of recreational items like RVs, Motorhomes, Fish camp trailers Etc. You will find another boat.

State Permits for lakes that adjoin two states....rip off.
Here is some more food for thought. Alabama non resident permit......$46. Georgia non resident permit.......$24. Each is for one year.
