I would think the saltwater style swimbaits would be the best to use as trailers. Fish trap, Big hammer, etc. These baits are solid, not hollow or they have no hook slots. They are made to go on lead heads so they will stay on better and they should last longer.

Yes, when the baits get crooked it can effect how true they run. put a paperclip through the hook eye to hold it. Swish the bait back and forth for 30 seconds to 1 minute in boiling water and then hang it by the paperclip through the hook eye. If you store the bait straight and hanging it should always run true. the only thing wrong with those worm and tube baits is that there called swimbaits. If they match your aplication(and it sounds like they do) then throw them and catch fish! they are good baits I just have a hard time calling them swimbaits as for the baby bass, they are kinda inbetween. They arent so heavy that they are bottom bouncers but they sink a little faster then slow sinking shallow running baits. You can keep them shallow with your retreive though.

TW has only orderd slow sinks and floaters. When they order "sinking" They are sent slow sink. I released the floaters and slow sink first and TW never requested the fast sink when they came out.

A 6in bait is considered small in swimbait terms. A lot of guys use 6in baits for smallmouth so your northerns are plenty big enough to eat a little 6in bait. I think your more afraid of the size of the bait then the fish are.

Smaller is coming very soon but if you have to have one now I think the Tylures is a tad smaller and Jackall has one thats a little funky looking but not too bad. I would stay away from the cheap ones

You might be able to find a big hollow body but a weighted hook big enough for it, will probably put you over 2.oz Your best bet will be a lean floating hardbait like a 7in MS Slammer or something with a similar profile.

Carrington, I am just covering most of the bases. I have talked to lake rangers and when they stock small channel cats the bass line up and eat them just like they do when they stock trout. I have also had bass spit up baby channels and bullheads in the livewell. They do eat them and they are something different ,as far as lures go, that the bass dont see. Plus I have a bunch of standard prey colors. They still eat trout colors too

I dont understand why they didnt put tails on those baits. They would look SOOOOOO much better and it would have tamed them down a little to a more natural swim.

There are swimbaits and then there are swimbaits. When you hear guys talking about BIG fish catching swimbaits they aren't talking about the hollow paddletail baits or the senko looking "swimbaits" You can fish those baits on 10lb test and a med hvy bass rod.

I am only guessing but.... maybe some clear coat got on the cloth joints? Maybe if you work the bait in your hands for a couple minutes you can break it in and then it will swim? I have never even held one but if the joints arent free and loose it wont swim.

bummer, ok go get me a brown. I was fishing in the rian one day and I was getting bit just about every cast using my little trout swimbait which is about 5 1/2 in long. I kept missing and I was getting frustrated. When the rain let up for a minute I could see a school of 1-2 lb rainbows swiping at my swimbait. I put on a tiny crankbait and quicky caught dinner. Then I went back to chassing bass. I caught one to. the old 12in Hudds had regular boot tails or flat tails. They did not have the current wedge tail design that he is using now. They havent been made in a long time and they are rare and expensive now. I assume you heard about one of his old baits but who knows maybe he is going to redoe a 12 As for wihch ROF, well you realy need to think about what depth you want to fish. Most guys like the 5 and 12. The 0 is a floater and doesnt realy swimbecause the tail breaks the surface. The 16 is heavy and designed to fish deep. The 12 will also fish deep but it takes a little longer to get down and you gotta reel a little slower to keep it down. The five sinks slowly and can be waked. Depending on how deep you want to fish or your budget, I would start with a 5 and a 12. If you have trout then just get the standard trout, its a good match. if you got baby salmon then get his salmon colored one. Keep it simple and start with only a few quality baits. put in your time and you will be rewarded.

No, they are not glued in. I wouldnt use a sealer either. The water soakes into the toothpicks and the wood swells and keeps them good and tight. The tails are not under any stress so they rarely need to be replaced. If you ever need to replace one just push the tooth pick peices out with something like a piece of wire etc. Then put the new tail and push toothpicks through the holes and trim them.You can put a little sper glue where the tail meets the bottom of the slot for extra security.

Are you playing the fish or cranking them in? Even with the paddle tubes the fish have a lot of leverage and if you give them a chance to get away they will. Crank hard and fast all the way to the boat and try to prevent them from jumping.
