  1. Something you and I agree upon.
  2. They are made in Korea. I'm not sure if Koreans build reels any better than Chinese, Malaysians, Thais, or Japanese.
  3. Yeah, right, ask Bmadd. Bmadd is one person, Raul. I don't understand why his problem is so unforgivable when similar, or worse problems, have arisen with Daiwa and Shimano. I owned a Shimano Curado SF that inscently scraped when it was cranked, and two Cardiff's that cast about 1/2 as far as my Abu C4s. Would I be wrong if I declared Simano junk? Yes, I would. I owned two Daiwa spinning reels, both of which had spools that you just couldn't get tight - they oscillated terribly under drag. I ended up giving them to my kid's boy scout troop. So, Daiwa's junk? Hardly. I suppose I just don't understand why people have what is clearly isolated problems and other are quick to declare their reels junk. Severe cases of brand-bias, I suppose.
  4. I contacted Abu for a screw I messed up on one of my Revos. I received 5 screws free of charge in three days. I've never had to send anything to Abu for repair or ask for any other parts. One measure of quality control is how many times you have to deal with a service department - or a recall. The Eon and Torno aren't in Abu's line up anymore. So what they are thinking is anyone's guess. But at any rate, the Eon, while unorthodox looking, was very highly regarded and apparently one of the best casters ever made. I don't have any experience with the Torno, but I've seen mixed reviews - but mostly good. Whatever it is, I've been favorably impressed. Apparently many other have been, too.
  5. Good point. I've noticed that when something goes wrong with an Abu, it's declared "junk." When something goes wrong with a Shimano or Daiwa, it "needs service." Funny how that works. :
  6. Raul, I'm sure that's exactly what's happened.
  7. I'm curious as to why suddenly Abu is using bad quality materials. Abu has been making centrifugal brakes for as long as I can remember. I've never had a problem with my Abu reels with centrifugal brakes. I also tried Googling up the problem described and I can't find a similar complaint anywhere.
  8. Which companies? Did they tell you?
  9. Great idea. I never thought of that. All my Abus that do have centrifugal brakes came with spare brakes.
  10. How long have you had it? I know you stated you were stuck with it, but are you really? Revos haven't been out that long. It may still be under warranty by Abu. If you don't want it, you could still return it to them for repair and then sell it as used but in good working order - you'll get more money. Otherwise, I'd try taking it back to the store. I've taken stuff back to stores, particularly Bass Pro Shops, well after I was supposed to be able to return it. Most store are particulary good about that if you take it back for store credit, or exhange it for something else. Worth a try. Sorry you hate it. I have 5 Revos (all mag brake) and haven't had a lick of trouble.
  11. Neither have I. I even tried to Google it up and came up with nothing. Just curious, when you push the weights down, do they snap into place?
  12. I use the smallest speed clips even on my biggest cranks. I used to take the split ring off the lures but found that except for the very smallest lures it didn't change anything.
  13. Tungsten is denser than lead, and much denser than steel. A tungsten weight will be smaller than an equal weight lead weight, and significantly smaller than an equal weight steel weight. Also, like BBR said, tungsten is non-toxic.
  14. I forgot about white perch. They will hit anything. If they were any bigger they might be good sport, but the only ones I catch around here are panfish sized and don't fight as well as bluegill.
  15. What for. You've got you own ideas and your mind is made up. This thread is about Pinnacle reels. They're good reels. Get one.
  16. AFAIK, Abu doesn't make OEM reels for anyone. There are some Abu brand reels that are carried exclusively by some retailers - for instance the C5 and the REVO SC carried by Cabelas. But I don't think Abu makes reels for anyone other than themselves. There are some Abu look-a-likes sold by BPS, but these are made by Pinnacle/Silstar, too.
  17. Without diminishing the seriousness of lead pain in toys, it's important to keep this in perspective. Given the quantity of stuff that comes out of China, these recalls account for an infintecimal portion of it. Face it, you CANNOT get away from Chinese stuff. Even if your product says made in Korea, Malaysia, USA, whatever, it is almost certainly going to contain something from China - Chinese steel, nickel, zinc, polymers, brass, chemicals, etc. These companies that contract with Chinese firms to build their products are the ones responsible for quality control. It reflects on them as much as it reflects on the Chinese manufacturer.
  18. Pinnacle makes BPS reels, including the Johnny Morris reels. That's one of the reason you won't find Pinnacle in BPS stores. Don't you find it odd that Pinnacle makes a whole line of reels, but that line is absent from BPS stores (you can buy Pinnacle at Cabelas 'cuz Daiwa mostly makes their reels)? That's because they don't compete with their own brand label against their own reels made under a store brand. I appreciate your passion, but you are wrong.
  19. Sorry, with all due respect. I think you are wrong on this. Pinnacle makes BPS and Browning reels and has been for years. When this topic came up on another forum, some folks far more "in the know" than you or I stated that that the superficial resemblence between Pinnacle and BPS is not coincidental. BPS has confidentiality agreement with it's OEM manufacturer(s), who compete with BPS reels under it's own name - Pinnacle. BPS is not going to tell you who makes their reels. But Pinnacle is known as the OEM manufacturer of store-branded reels for the largest outdoor e-tailer. That's BPS. Tackle Tour confirmed this in a Pinnacle line-up review. AFAIK, Shimano, Abu Garcia and Pflueger have no affiliation - except that Pflueger is owned by Shakespeare, and Abu Garcia is owned by Pure Fising. Shakespeare and Pure Fishing are owned by Jarden.
  20. Pinnacle/Silstar does make BPS reels, including Johnny Morris reels. Pinnacle is the OEM manufacturer of reels for the largest online retailer of fishing equipment - BPS. And speaking of Pinnacle, their new Matrix II looks like it would be a killer reel for cranking: http://www.silstar.com/guide/products.aspx?Pid=315&Cid=233
  21. The upside to recession is that is is generally a cure to the bad practices that brought it on. Banks with poor lending standards and borrowers lacking dscipline are being taught a lesson. The slump in housing starts means that, for the time being, new residential development will slow down (a good thing in my neck of the woods). Those of us who have chosen to live well within our means will withstand it all.
  22. And it's going to stay in a slump, at least for awhile, unless the Fed cuts the interest rate. But if the Fed cuts the interest rate, we're looking at increased inflation. Looks like there is no choice that will fix everything. My choice would be to leave the interest rate where it is and control inflation ahead of the holiday season.
  23. No. It's not even predicted. The Fed has predicted "a slow down in economic growth," not a reversal of economic growth. Until there is a reversal, there is no recession. US economic growth has been extremely brisk for the last few years. Unsustainably so. It has to slow down sooner or later. The predictions are for "moderate" growth next year. There are a lot of industrialized nations that would kill for "moderate growth."
