  1. There are a lot of crayfish species that feature some sort of blue highlights, especially right after molting. Think about this...
  2. Match the hatch is a fly fishing term, and it refers to actual bug hatches. Doesn't really fit in with most bass angling situations. As far as what jig represents to a bass, irrespective of color.... Something easily edible.
  3. That was my original point. Most flipping sticks are longer because they add length at the handle. My 7-6 XH stick is actually shorter from the reel seat to the tip than any of my 7 footers. It is about leverage, as long as the geometry supports it, e.g. a longer handle that you actually use.
  4. Why is it easier to lift a fish, or anything on a stick if the fulcrum and the point of effort are farther apart? I mean, why bother putting the butt of the rod in your gut, or on tuna rigs, in the lap harness if it doesn't offer an advantage? Are most using the wrong term? Is there another term? You can't possibly convince me that no handle is the same as a long handle.
  5. I guess, but why doesn't it play out like this on the water? Surely there are a ton of dynamics beyond just leverage not being considered.
  6. Depends on where your hands are.... Some levers below. A fishing pole is a class three lever.
  7. Probably more than 99% of that info. I probably have a thick folder from my younger days, LOL. People that are concerned with government plots really need to watch C-SPAN for a half hour or so. Its will be pretty apparent that they are completely incapable of some complicated plot to steal your children.
  8. One coat of U-40 doesn't seem to drastically change the feel. That works for me.
  9. Oh, and 100# Fluoro inhibits action as much as 30# wire. At about 60# is where the law of diminishing returns set in.
  10. Everyone assumes that its the teeth that do the damage. They can and do, but generally it the rough facial scales that wear through the line. 50 to 60# fluoro, or 20# titanium works fine, and is very durable. I've caught some pretty big northerns, with line as light as 6# mono. if I'm targeting them, I use something much bigger. I'm not losing a $20 Cowgirl to a two bit hammer handle, LOL.
  11. Well, the side plate is graphite. The spool is aluminum, but who knows what, if any, alloy it is. Galvaninc corrosion makes sense...deposition finish and base material. Still doesn't answer the question of what caused this. in your location, I bet you don't have any clue what "ice melter" is, LOL. Thanks for the info.
  12. Looking back, the reel was last fished mid December, and came back out about three weeks ago, so it had to be pretty fast acting. Been racking my brain thinking of what would commonly be found around the back door. I have another theory, and this one makes more sense. Ice melter. Not rock salt, but the nasty stuff that melts ice in sub 20° temps. One little chip in the paint, mixed with a clump of snow from your boots, splashes on the reel... Anyone think that stuff could be caustic enough to do this? I know it could easily happen in my mud room. Rods are on racks along the back wall, waders, rain gear on hooks next to them. It could easily happen to me, though I have neoprene covers on my reels. Anyway, I am still looking at what could have happened. obviously, it was an accident. When I ran my custom aquarium business, I ate customer mistakes occasionally, and I still do this with my reel maintenance business. The good faith is sometimes worth more than any advertising you can buy. No one is looking for handouts, but if it turned out to be a flaw, then the manufacturer should know. Heck, I complain when I get a poor meal, or shoddy service at my family's restaurant, and its FREE! Management needs to know. Maybe its not a flaw, maybe it isn't anyone's fault. Like I said, despite the missing metal on the spool, the reels works fine. i simply decided not to do anything to it, get some pics, and leave it to the owner to figure out what to do.
  13. 7' medium power/moderate action is what you want.
  14. Just got off the phone with ghoti, and he gave some VERY good ideas of what to look for that might do this. Thanks man! I didn't send the reel to anyone, I gave it back to its owner, along with the pics I took. The rest is up to him. I assume he's sending the pics to Quantum. I've sent reels in to other companies where the damage was obviously self inflicted, along with a note explaining what happened, and they've fixed the reel for no charge. Pinnacle recently provided me with parts free of charge without me even asking for it. Technically, the reel isn't broken, and in fact works just fine. If they don't fix it, so what. I'll clean it for him,and we'll still try and figure out what did this.
  15. What are talking about? That couldn't be farther from the truth. :-? ************************************************************* I use a Medium power, moderate action rods for small cranks up to mid divers. For the big diving plugs, I use a MH mod. action rod. BPS Cranking Sticks Are a good deal if you don't want to spend a fortune. I use St. Croix Avids, AVC70MM and AVC70MHM
  16. I use that and the AVC70MHM for bigger cranks.
  17. I guess you don't care about accurate voting districts, schools, police, fire dept., sanitation, or other services then?
  18. You mean like the stuff commonly used to clean reels? Nope, that wouldn't do this.
  19. Guys, I don't think he did anything differently that you or I would do to this reel. Normal use... Something may have spilled or leaked on it. I had three older Quantums, with a similar finish and all three eventually bubbled up, peeled, and flaked off. But nothing like this. The thing that gets me wondering is why, if all the rods and reels were stored in the same place, only this one has the issue. Gulp! Alive, sure, we ARE on the Great Lakes. I've never had that do anything to any of my gear except make it stink.
  20. I have LTBC70MF and LTBC70MHF and they great rods, if a little pricey. Avids represent one the best "bang for the buck" deals out there. I own five of them.
  21. Get a moderate action rod and a landing net.
  22. Automation and infrastructure costs $$$. I see this kind of waste in big corporations all the time. I did a cost survey for a call center a few years ago. Each "seat" or employee came with a cost to the corporation of over $2200/month when you added everything up. All that so employees can check email and facebook. Would be cheaper to give them a crackberry and make them work from home, and that's assuming they contribute no value to the company, LOL.
  23. Actually, that was his mother...Mary.
  24. One government agency helping another's numbers.... USPS looks a little better revenue wise this quarter.
  25. It depends on the reel, and what I'll be spooling up. On my Alphas and Sols, after a bunch of cutoffs and reties, i can easily cats the entire spool, so they get totally refilled. Braid reels get a heavy mono backer, and I use about 20% more than a casts worth of line. I use shallow spool spinning reels, so just a few wraps of mono, and the rest is braid. If I'm using fluoro or mono, I fill the entire spool.
