  1. Hey all, Going to be fishing a tournament on Lake of the Ozarks (hopefully) for the FLW collegiate tour, just wondering what are some of your go to baits for this body of water?
  2. Looked a little more at the rods and thinking about picking up the Mick Iaconelli 6'8 spinning rod anyone use this rod before?
  3. It provides an awesome combination of relaxation and challenges. Trying to outwit a smart predator gives you a sense of respect and a deep reverence for nature and teaches us all that we need to live in symbiosis with nature and not just consume our natural resources. I love how even though we sometimes compete with each other to see who can catch bigger fish, we still all agree with the fact that fishing is one of the best things in the world. As Henry David Thoreau once said "Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after."
  4. Hey all, I have an opportunity to acquire a couple of Daiwa Rods and Reels coming up. Does anyone know a good spinning combo with Daiwa gear? I would like this spinning rod to be mostly used with plastics and jerbaits. Also I am looking for a good baitcasting combo to throw cranks and spinners with (also made by Daiwa). Any help is appreciated, thanks
  5. My collegiate fishing club invited Jim Trow, 2005 world champion walleye angler, to talk to our club last Thursday. It was a cool talk from a laid back guy. He gave tips on slip-bobbering, jigging and trolling for some big walleyes. Not what I usually fish for but great tips none the less.
  6. Thanks for the tips. I'll working on keeping calm under pressure while fishing the tournaments
  7. Hey all, Just wanted to say I'm on my way into the tournament scene. Registered as a competitor member with the FLW so I can fish a tournament or two of that next year (hopefully on Lake of the Ozarks or the La Crosse Tourny). Looking forward to it, but have a lot of work to do between now and then perfecting casts and techniques. Very excited about this though. Any tips for a new tournament angler? Or if you've fished the collegiate tourny before let me know
  8. Just remember your basic math negative + negative = more negative negative x negative = positive So you should just figure out a way to multiply weather conditions and you'll spank 'em all day long. Makes it sound easy don't it?
  9. Could use some help here. The other day I hooked up what was probably a ten pound fish. Was definitaley not a bass. Sort of looked like a catfish/carp mix. Head was catfish shaped without whiskers. The body was dark green with a lighter under side. Long and slender, minimal fins. Sorry I don't have a pic I couldn't land the thing cause it was heavier then the test on my line and managed to break it right next to the boat. Is this a dogfish? Or some other species? Location caught: Southeastern Wisconsin
  10. I have the classic Black and white XR8. Have caught more pike on it then bass, but definitlely a lure I'm looking at getting more of. As I have expanded my tackle to include more fishing of Rapalas including Husky Jerks and Xraps this summer, I am quickly becoming a big fan of Rapala's baits. Also caught a spotted gar on it today (pain in the butt getting that thing back in the water and a really freakin ugly fish to boot).
  11. Thanks guys and I hope a catch a bunch more like that too
  12. Hey all, was out at my favorite fishing hole today and caught a new personal best: 6.4 lbs This hawg is a rarity in Wisconsin Length 21" Girth 15" Caught on a small 3.5" pumpkin colored *** Beaver! Thanks to *** for helping me produce a great fish. Check out the photos below: It doesn't look tremendous in the photos compared to me (i'm 6'3, 265lbs) But she's definitely a pig.
  13. I was looking at the southern lures website and notice they also have the thudertoad which is a frog buzzbait style lure. Anyone tried these? I love buzzbait and Frog fishing so If I can combine the best of both world s with this bait that would be awesome
  14. I'm glad I didn't buy any yet if they aren't vary good. I'll look into the other kicking frogs though and see if they help. Other than than I just stick to scum and Spro Bronzeye Frogs twitched across the lily pads
  15. Anyone here fish with these? and if so how do you fish them. I really enjoy fishing with the regular weedless scum frog and the bigfoot looks like it may produce some awesome fish. thoughts?
  16. Well, I fished in my first tournament today. Didn't quite goes as well as I had hoped. Only hooked up a couple of undersized LM and my partner caught about a dozen smaller LMs. I was fishing from the back of the boat. I think weather had a lot to do with it. It was 90 degrees here yesterday, then it rained and this morning started off with rain and a temp of about 45 degrees. Overall, though, I had fun and caught the first fish of 2009 for me today
  17. Hey all, Does anyone know a good site that sells unpainted cranks in various shapes/sizes? I want to get into painting my own to try and save some money and also create something the fish haven't seen before. Any help is appreciated Thanks, Justin
  18. Might Have to try that, I have some sizmic toads in Watermelon Red
  19. Probably (all fish stink). I've never been musky fishing though, so I wouldn't know for sure
  20. I love fishing for Northern Pike. Also, I like catching crappies when I can find them and catch some slabs in the 11-12 inch range
  21. Here is a Pic (i found some batteries) Never had any luck with the white senkos so I thought instead of junking them (since the price takes a bit out of my wallet) I would try them in a new fashion. I hope this works
  22. I have to get some batteries for my camera, but hopefully soon
  23. Last night I modified a 1/4 oz chaterbait by trimming the skirt and adding part of a white pearl senko cut carefully up the center to create paddles as a trailer. Can't wait to try it out tomorrow, hope it gives a sight that bass haven't seen before
  24. Hey all, This weekend I will be fishing my first tournament ever! Exciting for sure (it's just a small tournament maybe a $150 prize). However, I need some help with what to throw. Here's a lake layout: A few points, water seems to want to flow slightly towards the southeast, some nice areas where the contour drops pretty rapidly from about 6 to twelve feet. Max depth 36 feet. Location: Central Iowa (i.e. the bass haven't spawned here yet or are just beginning two) This is my thinking for my three rods Baitcaster: Chrome/Black Lipless Ratl-trap (later switch to Chartreuse spinner if Ratltrap doesn't work) Spinnning 1: Shaky-head worm, trick stick or texas rigged lizard Spinning 2 (with braid): topwater(maybe temps are supposed to stay near 80 the next three days here). Or possibly crankbaits What would you guys do or throw? ARe my selections good?
