Stained Water
If you can see only a foot or two in the water, that is what I call stained. If that is what I'm faced with,I would throw a wide wobbling crankbait, probably in a chartreuse pattern. The next thing I would do would be to find some laydown trees and pitch a black base jig (with rattle) into it.Still no bites?I'd get out a spinnerbait with tandem Colorado blades, chartreuse skirt. Dont catch 'em all.

Anyone here know where to find Pinpoint products?
Bud,I tried to go to the MotorGuide site but that link is dead. All web searches I have done (Yahoo,Google,MSN),the links that show up are either dead or a few years out of date. I just thought someone on here may have a dealer around them that sold PinPoint products and could give me a phone # or something.

Re: Going one last time this year!
kbj, you are correct,Virginia is below the Mason Dixon line!(Hint,Hint Glenn) I think we get put in the Northern tours because there are so many great lakes below us on the map.The southern lakes outnumber the northern lakes by a long shot.

a swing and a miss
I agree.A senko is hard to resist. To the fish,it looks like what they just hit is injured, dying and sinking slowly down toward its death.Easy meal.

Al Linder the fish grappler
The slime coat is usually not harmed just by grabbing and lifting a fish out of the water. The most damage occurs when a bass is boated and it flops around on your carpet for a while.Thats when you need to lip it and get it off the floor and back in the water before too much harm is done.

Bought the used Skeeter aluminum
Congrats! It's always exciting when you get a new boat.I'm fishing with boat #8 right now.

What kind of fishfinder do you use?
I have an in dash flasher and can use and read it quite well......I like it but I also like to see the picture because as you said, you miss stuff with the flasher if you dont pay real close attention. And when I say cruising around,I'm actually meaning putt, putt, putting along slowly around points and ledges.I've decided on a GPS unit, now that I have another Aqua Vu camera and will need the GPS to find stuff again.Especially on different lakes. Are you selling any of those 1240's you got?My dad needs one for his boat.

Stream fishing Winter smallmouth
I agree with most of what Pete said.In the winter on rivers or streams,I only fish the deeper "holes".That is where you will find fish stacked up in the winter. There is a small creek that I fish year round for smallmouth, its not very wide, maybe 20 ft in some spots. There are only about 4 really deep holes on a 2 mile stretch, but I know when I get to them that fish are there without a doubt. My best bait by far is a small jerkbait (Husky Jerk) in particular. My most productive method of catching those fish with it is to establish where the fish are first. If the water is clear enough and you have a good pair of polarized shades, just stare into the hole for a minute or two. Most times you can catch a glimpse of a fish flashing(moving around) with sufficient sunlight.Once you see the first fish, you'll know where they are and if you keep on staring at that spot, you'll probably see more.(Old trout fishing trick) Once I have established where they are hanging or think they should be hanging,I throw the jerkbait upstream.Once it hits,I rip it really fast(to get it down) until it nears the strike zone, then I kill it.If a fish doesnt hit it when I stop it,I let it sit for a few seconds then I rip it again, hard and fast.A smallmouth does not seem to have the power to resist an easy meal like that.If the water is too cold and I cant get a bite with the jerk,I will throw a Carolina Rig with a 4" french fry type bait. Most times it is green pumpkin in clear water.I dont use a real long leader, most often in the winter, the fish are right near the bottom. Another good choice in the cold water would be a finesse jig,the smaller the better. But all in all,the jerkbait is my #1 choice everytime. Dont catch 'em all

What kind of fishfinder do you use?
I feel like a bigger/better unit by the wheel would suit me better, since I've been doing it that way for so long.I do alot of cruising around looking for stuff and really cant do that much with the trolling motor.I've always done it that way and its been effective for the most part, thats just how I do it.I cruise over spots,if I see something I like,I drop the trolling motor and fish it.I wont have a total piece of junk on the front, just not a GPS unit like on the console.I've narrowed my search a great deal in the past few days,it's getting real close to trigger time.

Re: Some people just dont get it.
Jetski's :......there's an island on my home lake that I have planted brush around over the past few years and in the summer, the jetskier dudes like to race around that island.Just imagine trying to sit over your brushpiles and having a group of 4-6 jetskis come by you full blast about every 30 seconds for about 10-15 laps. Those guys are killing me! >

Dropshot-ing
I read an article recently and Aaron Martens claimed to have caught bass on a drop shot rig in 140 ft of water........ Thats hardcore bassin right there! Whenever I fish a dropshot,I will always fish it vertical......straight over top of fish on my graph. The whole idea behind the dropshot rig is to get the lockjawed bass to bite by keeping the bait right on their nose until they smash it.It sounds like you've got the shaking part right, thats basically all I do with it.But I always find fish before I drop my rig.Its critical to have it within close proximity of some fish when fishing it vertical since your not moving it along the bottom like a regular plastic worm where you cover a whole area instead of just one spot. I wont fish a drop shot horizontally along the bottom,I feel like there are better rigs for that.(Texas,Carolina)

How is that Eagle 480? I've seen them around at very reasonable prices, does it show arches clear? And pick up brushpiles down deep?Shad pods?

Someone here has to know something about this process.Tell me somethin'.... Thanks.

Your top three bass catchin' techniques
Fluke - usually under docks or around laydowns (I would say grass but we dont have any > ) Crank - best on points for me,digging along the bottom Senko - killer dock bait, probably the best in my opinion
