  1. Hey guys. I found the above mentioned reel in one of my older tackle bags. My father picked it up at a pawn shop some years ago. I found a page on the internet and it looks to be from either 87 or 88. It is a high speed 6.2:1 ratio reel and still works great. Anyone else have one of these lying around or even still fishing with one? Anyone else have any favorite older reels that your still attached to or use?
  2. I hear you guys. My ultimate plan is to get back to NE Alabama as soon as I can. The Huntsville area where I'm from and is super nice and one of the fastest growing cities in the south. This weather like bassectomy said, is plain old depressing, haha.
  3. I love to watch Bill. Would definitely be cool to meet him in person. His blooper tapes are classic and hilarious. If anyone has not seen these, go to youtube and search for bill dance bloopers. Steven Seagal, I have to admit I have seen a ton of his movies and actually like them. But of course I don't mind bad acting, and loads of senseless violence either. I can see how he might be a bit of a pain in the a*% though ;D
  4. Welcome I'm not anywhere near you but with spring coming on and water temperatues rising. Most bass will be beginning to move up from deeper water. There are a number of tactics to fish for them. Try reading some of the articles on site here for prespawn and spawing periods. TONS of great info. Good luck!!!
  5. Hey guys. Just posting to vent. Here in southeast Ohio it is still very cold. And I saw the weather tonight for this week. RAIN and all week long. Coming up from Alabama a couple years ago, I absolutely cannot wait until I can get back down south to Lake Guntersville where I was raised and stay around there for good!!! I'm in desperate need of some warm days, some sunlight, and some bass fishing, haha. :'(
  6. Yeah it's a ways off and I'm already itching to be down in the mountains fishing for trout. Thanks again for all the replies. I'll let my dad know about all the lures. This should be a good trip. I don't know excatly where we'll be but from what I hear it is definitely remote and backs up to some national forest land so it should be fun. The cabin is about 30 feet from the creek
  7. Thanks guys. I'll try some of the above listed and see how I do.
  8. Hey guys. I am going to West Virginia in early May with my father. We have a friend who owns a cabin on a stream that backs up to nationl forest land. The guy fishes for trout throughout the summer on a fly rod. We will be using ultralight micro spinning tackle for them Any suggestion on lures or bait for the best catch rates. He suggested night crawlers? Inline spinners of any color or size?? Grubs or small jigs??
  9. Thanks RoadWarrior and all others. I thought about it this morning and came to the conclusion that just like you said, I already have a worm/jig rod covered. I think now I'll invest like you said in a treble hook/ crank rod with a medium action. Thanks guys, these forums are great. By the way RoadWarrior. I see yall are heading to Guntersville. If you can, see if you can get up river towards Scottsboro, about 20 minutes from Guntersville. Great fishing there around my hometown in the backwaters and creek arms.
  10. The rod I have right now is probably just like you said a fast action rod. I have heard roadwarrior say in many posts that softplastic fishing requires a rod with a firmer tip. Does that mean that a fast action rod isn't well suited to soft plastics and jigs?
  11. There are hundreds of these former mining pits near me. They are part of AEP Power and I have only fished them once. I managed a few small bass out of a couple on a 3" pumpkinseed grub on a jighead. There are so many it's hard to tell which ponds will be productive or have bass in them for that matter. I know alot of people around SE Ohio here probably fish them. I'd be interested in finding out from someone more about them and where to go and what to use. They seem to have no visible cover here and are pretty much just ponds in open fields. I do think that fishing with small baits like grubs / beetlespins helps by giving you the best chance at getting strikes on ponds like these.
  12. Hey guys. I have a nice 2 acre or so, maybe a bit bigger pond near me. It's on the campus of a college. I've fished it the past couple springs and summers and usually pull a fair amount of smaller bass out of it in the warmer months. I usually use 6 lb line and various grubs and 4" worms on jigheads rigged on light spinning tackle. The problem with the pond though is that there isn't any visible structure or cover. There is a large walkway/bridge that runs across the middle of it about 15 feet off the water with 2 large concrete pylons holding it up. One side has a gazebo about 6 feet or so out into the water which has a large drain under it that the water flows over and into. Other than that it is pretty bare and I usually just cast parallel to the banks when the weather is warm and there is some vegetation in the water. With the cold temps here in Ohio although warming up more and more every week, I fished a flipping jig very slowly last week with no success. With no boat and LCD, I don't know where to concentrate my efforts or what to use with the spawn still a month or maybe more away.
  13. Sorry. It will be baitcasting and I would be using it for just about everything. Spinnerbaits, Softplastics, Traps and cranks, you name it. I already have a 6'6 med/hvy rod now but don't know it's exact action. It isn't listed but I am thinking that most are fast action??
  14. Hey all. I have as of now, 1 rod and reel that I do most of my bass fishing with. I'm a student on a budget and can't afford a specialty rod for each application. The rod is a 6'6 M/H Tourlite by Quarrow produced for Dick's Sporting Goods. It is listed as a med/hvy power but does not list the action. I assume its a standard fast action which seems most common. It came as a combo with an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur V5000 baitcaster. The reel is a round type and is 5.3:1. I also found in my some tackle bags two older baitcasters. One is what looks like from some research online a 1987 or 88 Shimano Bantum Magnumlite Speedmaster low profile. It's a nice reel for the age and is 6.1:1 ratio. I also found a cheap South Bend low profile baitcaster that is 5.1:1. My question is what reel would you use what for and what rods to get to pair up to these reels. What reel would you pair to the 6'6 rod that I currently have?
  15. Hey guys. I was looking through some of my rods and reels tonight. Getting antsy for the upcoming fishing season, haha. I'm planning on soon buying a nice all-purpose rod and reel for bass fishing. I've read that a 6'6 Medium blank with a fast action would be about right for the most all purpose setup. Anyone have any thoughts on what rod and reel to get. I'm on a budget and not looking to spend a ton of money. I see some combos for around 100 to 150 bucks. Are these even worth the dough. It will probably come from Cabelas as I have a store about 70 miles from my house. Thanks
  16. Hey guys, new to the forums. I posted above in the Clubs section but thought I would put one here too. I'm originally from NE Alabama and have fished Lake Guntersville and the TN river since I was a kid. My folks moved here to SE Ohio about 2.5 years ago. There are two nice lakes about 15 minutes or so from me and I would love to start fishing them with someone who enjoys bass fishing as much as I do. I've fished some local ponds with a fair amount of success for a variety of species but am anxious to get out on a real impoundment. I no longer have a bass boat. We sold it when we came north So if anyones looking for a back of the boat partner or knows of any nice clubs, let me know. Hopefully I can get back down south eventually, but in the meantime I need some bass fishing!!!
  17. Hello, I'm brand new to the forums. Been lurking for a month or so I'm originally from NE Alabama and fished Lake Guntersville, the TN River and its backwaters since I was a kid. My parents moved here to Ohio about 2.5 years ago and I've been fishing some small ponds around the area. There are two nice lakes within 15 minutes of me and am looking to meet some fellow bass anglers to fish with. I don't currently have a boat. We sold our bass boat when we moved north If anyone knows of any clubs, or just needs a back of the boat fishing buddy, I'd be more than happy to share a boat with you, and finally do some real bass fishing here in Ohio. Although the following around here for bass fishing isn't what I'm used to down south
