Calling all motor guru's
Thanks again for the suggestion Simplejoe. My daily fishing I probably won't be making long runs but I do have tourney's at KY Lake and we have our trip to Pickwick. So I'd like to be able to buy a gas tank that will fit my needs the best I can. Does anybody know a place online that sells plastic gas tanks bigger then 12 gal though? I'll have to have measurements for the gas tank before I buy and I'll also have to measure my space to see if they fit.

Thanks for all the great suggestions guys. I plan on buying a 12 gal plastic tank instead of the two metal 6 gal tanks. I've never ran a motor around 60 HP and have no idea how much gas you can burn yet. One thing is for sure though I don't want to have to bother with switching the hose to another tank in the middle of a run. I figure I also new to buy a new bulb and line that will fit the new plastic tank as well right?? So if the problem was the bulb line this would solve the problem. Then if it doesn't I'll know to go down the line to the next thing. I'm looking forward to my pops getting back from his cruise Tuesday night. He used to work at a Marina and has worked on motors a fair amount if I remember correctly. So hopefully we can get this baby hammered out. I like to call this stuff "the new boat problems". I can remember when I my buddy got his boat and motor. He thought the prop looked dinged up so the first thing he did was buy a prop off ebay for it and put it right on. He never used the old prop either. So we went out and found the engine was spinning out at around 70% power. We went on with this problem for almost a entire summer. Then finally we put the old prop on and boom problem solved. ;D

Are you saying to replace the ball and hose plus the gas tanks or just both the gas tanks?

I just got back from the launch ramp. I was about to put in and went to unscrew the gas valve on the gas tank. After doing that I went to priming the ball and I don't know if I didn't notice this yesterday or if it didn't happened but the ball wouldn't tighten up. There were a couple times it come close but it would just release the pressure. This happened on both gas tanks.

I hear ya Simplejoe that's why I'm not afraid to admit I'm a newb at this point. You should have seen my friend and me when we got our first 9.9 john boat and trying to trailer the first time ;D. Now were both pro's with it and can put it on a trailer in a hurricane . I'm going to run out to the lake in a hour or so to see what happens. I'll post my results.

Calling all motor guru's
Ok so I just bought a used boat and motor. I was able to get her out for the first time today with my buddy. It took 4 ever but my buddy and I was finally able to figure out how your suppose to start her. Were used to the old 9.9 and hadn't had much experienced with a 87 60hp merc. While in the process I chocked and killed the engine several times. However I finally figured out the correct procedure and after some idling around decided to take her on plane. We set off and I pushed the motor throttle up. We got up and let out a big wahoo were on plane!!! Then about 7 or 8 seconds later the engine started bogging down and finally died. Well we checked the ball and discovered our gas intake was hooked to the tank that was empty. So we connected it to the one that was full. Still we had the same problem on the other tank. We pressured the ball and un tighted the cap on the gas tank that provides air pressure. We didn't unscrew it and it's a metal tank that I'm not to familiar with honestly. Well I remembered he said he didn't take it out all to often and it must have sat all winter. He told me he did use stabil though. So we docked and got a few gallons of fresh gas and oil in the dry tank. We moved the gas intake back to the tank with the fresh gas and the problem continued. So I gave the guy I bought it from a call to see if he's had any problems like this. I didn't expect yeah right before you bought it type of answer but was hoping he'd have some info being I'm a complete newb at this. He called his boat mechanic who he had work on some eletronics or something for him last year. He called me back and said it sounds like the Carburetor could be gummed up some. So now I'm trying to do some reseach, and I see many people using Seafoam and many people breaking down there carburetor with kits and cleaning them. The second option seems very daunting to me since I"m a total newb at this again. I thought I'd come on here post the problem and see what people have to say. BTW couldn't it also be a dirty fuel filter????? Edit. I'm going to take her out again on Saturday morning. I just messed with the gas tanks and unscrewed the valve releas air hole or what ever it's called on the gas tank. I noticed a fairly loud his when I did so as well. I'm wondering if they weren't open enough now.

What are you most happy about that you added to your boat?
I agree a couple of these galls would be perfect! Now on the subject of winches. I've seen the auto winches and thought that's over kill but a anchor winch would be nice. I want to anchor on spots allot more rather then relying on the TM to always keep me in position. Plus if it's a little windy the anchors should help a ton. Right now I don't do it that much because it's a hassle to dig out the anchor set it up and pull it back in when it's time to go. I want to make it a easy process so I'm not avoiding doing it because it's easier but not as effective to just use the TM.

I recently got a boat and I'm looking at things to add. I thought it would be agreat idea to make a thread to discuss things we've added to our boats that we like having the most. Right now I'm looking at adding a couple anchors and wenches for them. I'm also planing to add a on board charger. So what thing or mod have you done that you appreciate the most?

$300-$500
I agree go with the HDS unit.
-
$300-$500
I understand and I don't know your set up either but a single unit with a swivel might work placed at the steering column. Also is your budget for 300-500 each or all together? I'd also want at least one unit that had GPS unless I had a hand held unit. Also don't rule out having two different models. Personally I like a set up there my better unit is close to me while steering and looking for structure. I also want that unit to have GPS so I can mark a spot. While the other unit up front will be used for reading water temp while running the trolling motor and fine tuning my position. Frankly for the most part a high res grayscale unit can do that for you nicely. So I'd look for a deal on a Lowarance HDS unit with GPS and then maybe a decent Eagle unit for the trolling motor mount.

Looking at a boat need help.
87 or 88 but it looks brand new. Carpet and flooring is in great shape. The lights are just freaking awesome they are literally as bright as car head lights!! I'm psyched about this because I'll be switching over to the 3-11 shift at work soon. So this opens up all types of night fishing options now. I had planed to do allot more but now I'm might be doing more night fishing then anything else.

$300-$500
Honestly if I'm buying a Non side imaging unit. I'm buying a Lowrance or even a Eagle (same company) unit. I just like there display better or rather the way they display the bottom ect. Personally I'd go with a couple low price grey scale units and save for a side image unit. They are that good and believe me your going to want one after you fish a while.

Here you guys go The lights on the front are the bomb! It also has pedestal seats I plan to use. I was playing with it in the garage and discovered I have trim controls up front to! I about jumped for joy when I saw the switch and wondered what it did. I flipped it up and the motor started moving and my cat gor scared out of its mind. BTW does anybody know any good articles that would help me learn more about tilt and trim? Plus any other kinds of things that I'm going to need to know since I'm going to be using a boat a fair amount faster then a 9.9?

Looking at a boat need help.
Well we got up there a little late, because it ended up being a LONG DRIVE! We still got her out for a little while but maybe not as long as I'd like, but she ran great from what I could tell. Trailer is in fantastic shape, all the wiring was good. It has a decent TM on her and some great head lights for night fishing. Decks carpet all in solid shade. All in all it looks like a fantastic 1st used boat to move up to from my brother in laws 1636 we always used. My brother in laws boat has did it's job and got me hooked on fishing but boy it feels like your on a rolling log when it's half way windy out. My biggest concern on buying a new boat was the engine, because that can rack up a lot of money on ya. I wish I would have had the cash to have it inspected but I didn't know anybody local there either. However it peed good and ran good and sounded good. So that gave me some confidence. The gentlemen was a disabled veteran and had trouble standing for to long. So he had already bought a Roughneck 1960 with side beside seating and some other things that would help him on the water. So that gave me confidence he wasn't trying to get rid of a bad investment either. We talked and I was able to get it down to 2200$! After a run around town trying to find a 2 inch ball that fit my truck we headed back for the long ride home. So I'm a happy camper now and praying I bought a good engine that will hold up for a few years. Now I just got to look up proper maintenance I should do and how to run a boat with tilt and trim. BTW my 2 car garage is now officially a two boat garage. NEXT STOP PICKWICK!!!

Looking at a boat need help.
Ok so I've been looking at buying a decent tracker size boat to tow with my little truck. Right now I fish on my brother in laws 9.9 boat that is very skinny. We usually keep it in my garage and it's been great. However we want to fish some bigger watter and need a bigger boat. I've been looking everywhere and found one in my current budget range. However I need some tips on what to pay attention to so I can make sure it's in decent shape. The boats a couple hours away and I'm going to look at it Sunday the 28 . We either are going to take it out on the water, or he has some type of bunny ear hose thing he can hook the engine up to. So we can run the engine on. I listened to another engine run on one the other day it didn't see seem to run right. I didn't know if it was the set up, the cold temperature, or a bad engine. It honestly makes me feel better to take it out but the guy is in his 70's and now disabled and it's why he's selling it. Even though I still may insist on it so I can see how the boat handles as well and check for leaks extra. What other things should I be paying attention to? BTW here is the boat. http://stlouis.craigslist.org/boa/1615976927.html

Shimano Citica E Upgrade?
I've taken my curado spool and put it into my citica and I notices the difference. It's start up a fair amount faster but IMHO the metal pins are what I like. I had my citica break a pin on it's spool. I've also added the drive shaft bearing last week and it's smoother. However I haven't gotten a chance to get out on the water and put it under a load yet. You might want to think about replacing the spool bearings with some ABEC 7 bearings rather then spending 40$ on replacing the spool as well. This would also cause the spool to start up faster.

My Dog Died
Mike I'm sorry you lost your dog but be happy in the great life you two shared. I'm sure you gave that dog more love then any dog could ask for and it led a very happy life. So mourn, remember, and when your ready get another little pal. Give that dog the love you have to give and show it a life of the outdoors and happiness. I'm sure that dog will thank you for it with a ton of great memories as well.

I serouisly advise you stay away from this reel. I had one and the twitchin bar brake so I returned it. In less the a week the other one broke. I've also seen to other people at our local dicks return there's for the same problem. It also has a VERY WEEK DRAG! Your a ton better off lookin on the flea market here or on ebay for a used Citica 200E for 80-100$. You proably could find some new for 100$.

Yozuri Hyrid vs. Invizx
I love Invizx but hate Yozuri! You might want to try the Cabelas fluro. It's made by Seagur who makes Invizx and the 6lb I had on my spinning gear was nice. I've ordered some 8lb and 20lb a couple days ago.
