  1. heck, the mudhole lake i used to fish everyother day has carp in the 30-40 pound range in it. its only 80-90 acres. I happene to know the gentleman who broke the Ohio State Record Channel Cat........ pulled it out of Sippo Lake, Perry, Ohio (what i affectionatly call my mudhole) 39.50lbs. But hes a moron and didnt report it. He weighed it, snapped a poloroid that he keeps in his tackle box, and then let it go! His name is Don, and he is the kindest man ive ever met. Until you tell him that Bass is the fish to catch...... to him, if u rnt catching cats or carp, you might as well go home! But those carp get huge! I literally ran into one cruising in the canoe one time in the shallows, i still have a mental snapshot of me hitting what looked like a freaking LOG! but then the log took off thrashing throwing water in my face, and nearly tipping the canoe. All that translates out into me not screwing around with carp! If theyre up on the shallows where i fish for bass, i just throw a heavy jig at their heads to scare them off!
  2. ok, i stand corrected, did somemore homework! Bowfin are really populus in ur neck of the woods! dont know what i was thinking!? Sorry. (SO good to finnally get that 3rd star! 500 posts and counting! Full member! ;D)
  3. Bowfin was my first thought too......... but i didnt think they were native to waters that far south!? I ran into a bowfin in my mudhole lake..... lol FREAKED OUT! thought it was a snake head, they look alot alike in nasty water, and i had never heard of Bowfin before. But i didnt think Bowfin had those big whiskers?! IDK Either Bowfin or an exotic Catfish!?
  4. *Note the PINK rod...... that helped alot too! Even if its fishing, it has to be fashionable or she wont use it. lol I even bought her a pack of pink trick worms to play with when im fishing isolated spots, and she actually landed a little dink bass on one of them!
  5. marry your own Pam Martin-Wells. lol JK or dont get married........ just kidding. i get my fiance to go fishing with me. and if i can keep her going about once every two weeks, by the end of the summer ive got her asking me to go once a week! But i dont know if id call that a bass junky!? The one thing ive learned is that as long as im hooking her crawlers, unhooking her fish..... and always applauding her, shes happy. (that is for about two hours, then shes bored...lol) The thing i think is key, is to let her enjoy the time at the lake regardless. My sweetheart takes a book and a lawn chair along alot to just sit back and relax once shes done with fishing. So u might say my strategy is to slowly train her, slowly build up her tolerance levels, almost like training a pup! (Did I just say that!? Dont tell the Mrs!) Here, have a look at how happy she is.........
  6. My personal oppinion: Over rated. I'd take a horny toad anytime! but i have found that u can slow down a bit more with the Rage toad because of how much more surface area it has to support its body in the water Anyhow, I use the same rod for both, but im limited in what i can carry in to my fishing spot. 7' MH Rod. Medium-High Speed Reel. Berk. Fireline Crystal in 12-20lbs But if my thinkings correct, it really matters what situation youre using them for! When I fish the NASTY lily pads for bass I'd never think twice about using my 7' rod i mentioned above. But when ive had success twitching frogs over scum or submerged veggies....... i like a slightly lighter rod. ive even tossed my Spro Bronze Eye onto the 7'ers little sister rod, everything about its the same but its a 6'6" Medium action.......... and i use 12-16lbs Floro.(as long as the line doesnt sink the frog i like to bulk up right to the heaviest i can get) I dont know if that helps or not. But u dont need two super expensive set ups. the two i mentioned cost about $140 combined. thats rods, reels, and a spool of line on each! ;D
  7. oh. i forgot! What im trying to get answers to are: -What type of leader? -How Long? -What Knot to tie on to connect it to my line? -& how is it going to effect my presentations, and feel?
  8. so im not familiar with using leaders. but the new lake i live on, and will be geting familiar with in the spring is chalk full of bass, and pike. Ive been warned that theyll thrash my bass lures. I use ALOT of braid and people are telling me that Im supposed to use a leader to keep from losing my bass lures to the pike!? I think i have a few wire leaders in the bottom of my tackle box in a cigar tube, but i dont know how to really apply them! And my biggest concern is if theyre going to effect my bass fishing!? Im not as concerned about the briad presentations being effected, but i am concerned about it when i fish my topwaters, or other baits on mono or floro! Help!
  9. hi from just over the ohio state line. anything you wanna know ull find here!
  10. not sure, but weve got a similar lake here. Its going to be a state park. It was formerly closed to the public. it used to be owned by the Goodyear Company, it was their own private chunk of property. Formerly, it was only available for use by goodyear employees, family members of employees, retirees, and special guests. It has a nice chunk of land attached to it to that they called a "hunt club" area. and its home to one of the Goodyear Blimp Air Docks. If you've never been around the blimp, then u cant imagine how annoying it is. Youre trying to fish, and all you can hear is this intense buzzing! But back to topic.......... I was wondering the same thing. But this lakes a natural one, and im not sure how to approach it either from shore. they cleaned it up so much that I dont know what to throw to try and get the fish to bite. It almost looks like they pulled alot of the shore cover (mostly fallen trees) outta the lake! Idk. but ill let u know how my trips turn out when they open it up.
  11. haha! i used to do that in HS in drumline! It works! until u sweat the tape off! lol btw. If anyone cares, Flea, the bass guitarist from the red hot chili peppers had the same issue! he plays bass really hard, slapping a metal string all night literally wore holes in his thumb! He'd have his bass tech run on stage mid show, and pour fast setting superglue into the hole so he could keep playing!
  12. not suprising, your skins always going to keep changing on you. last year, mine decided that it was going to have a reaction to the lube i used to spray the gears on the reels with......... that was a nice surprise! ;D Id second the NuSkin idea, but becareful to make sure it dries all the way before you go casting or when u reel in you'll find the line wont be going back out. Past that I have no idea if the fish would sense the nuskin and how thatd affect the bite!? but nuskin does wonders, im a former bowler, and lifelong drummer, i wear skin off all the time. nuskins like magical medical superglue, itll fix just about any holes u can poke in urslef that dont gush blood! although id recommend applying before u get the thumb hole to prevent it in the first place
  13. welcome aboard........ welcome ashore! lol Bank beating for bass is an artform. those other guys can just pull the trolling motor, gun the outboard, and run to another spot to find the bass........ we shorefishermen are a different breed! It takes alot of thought, trial and error, and passion to bank beat for bass! So, welcome to the forum....... and good fishing!
  14. Im smack in the middle of the worst snow storm in history in this part of the country.......... every city in this part of North East Ohio has a new Feb. snow record! And this entire time, Ive been ACHING to go fishing! so. grit the teeth, turn the race on, scream at the boys running circles instead, and keep posting until the sun comes back, and the snow goes away! ;D Good Fishing....... nevermind........ Good Luck Thinking About Fishing! ;D
  15. So, are we talking a two day trip? or what? And again, Im gunna ask that whoever is the most expierenced angler on the trip sit me in their boat, im still REALLY green at bass fishing and Ive never fished from a boat, in deep water, or for smallies. So id love someone to teach me! LEt me know! Still really excited! ;D
  16. THATS AWESOME! Do you donate with Lifesource?! And im really happy to see that youre going to keep donating...... And btw. u really know your stuff! a little too much infact?! know someone who works at a blood center?! or were u just a long time donor!?
  17. BTW. Zero Limit, and tyrius. I noticed you both live in the chicago area....... Lives in your community are now "My" responsibility..... lol as of today, pen went to paper, and the Contact Center I work at signed on Lifesource Blood Services, Chicagolands largest Blood Bank, and sister Org. to the Central Blood Bank out of Pittsburgh, PA (Already one of our clients) So, soon, very soon, it'll be part of my job to take care of making sure we can save people in your area when they need blood! Im excited...... Sorry if I call you. lol ;D
  18. when i say this, i am in no way trying to argue. just wanted you to know why. They legally arent allowed to profit from a unit of blood. thats %100 all the cost of maintaining, collecting, storing, processing, and handling the blood. It costs money to run blood centers, which are alot of times seperately run (By non-profits)..... but the blood center has to charge the hospital to stay open. The hospital then has to pay their staff to use the blood, ect. Each time u pay for a unit of blood, youre paying for an entire chain of things....... The Person who called to schedule the donor, the person who took the blood, the bills for the blood center, the storage costs and testing costs, the lab tech at the hospital, the nurse administering the blood, ect..... So it is really, no where near free to them. Geting Blood Donors to come in, its an expensive biz. Sadly, most people wont give blood without something for them! Usually Tshirts. The problem comes when ever a hospital has a severe operational issue......... sometimes its poor managment, sometimes it just a REAL lack of staff, equipment, or both. And thats why the cost goes up. But if theyre profiting from the blood, its blunt wrong. And legally, theyre walking an EXTREMELY fine line.
  19. This is an honest request for help, Im taking on a new role at work, And I want to do some research on "Social Tribes" and how they interact and how my company can put the willingness of these groups to work to help others! The company I work for is one of the best contact and service centers in the industry for the Blood Bank Industry. We contact, recruit, schedule, and assist Blood Banks from all over the country. Given the recent crisis with the severe winter weather in the East, weve been faced with an interesting problem, we are literally, THOUSANDS of units of blood short to support some MAJOR communities in our country........ Just to name a few without tying up the clients names, Houston, Tx. Chicago IL. Pittsburgh, PA. & Cleveland, OH. Just to name a few of those places..... Ive told you all this, because I think that as a "Tribe" (Or social group) Fishermen are a great group of people who go out of their way to help others and make a positive impact on their communities! So, I was wondering if you are reading this. If you could just post to let me know if you: 1. Are Currently A Blood Donor. 2. Would Consider Donating Blood If You Were Asked 3. Would Donate Blood If The Opportunity Was Given To You At An Event You Attended (Fishing Expo, Tournament, If A Fishing Club Sponsored A Drive, Ect.) 4. If There Were Something To Gain From It (Example, If A Major Fishing Tackle Company Teamed Up And Gave Out A Free Pack Of Baits Per Donor, Or Raffled Off A Bass Boat, Or Something?!) Thanks for the feedback......... I promise that Im doing this simply because Im trying to get a feel for if as a community fishermen are open to the idea of helping save lives by donating blood! And if you get the chance to donate, please do so! Alot of our countries blood supply is in the hands of the American Red Cross, ALOT of that blood will go to Hati, with the weather turning for the worst again, it means that our country is in need of average people, like you, to help your friends in your community! Thanks for reading!
  20. I second that........... sadly, (Ive found myself saying this before, and Im sure Ill say it again) "Jeff Gordon is a MORON!" First of all, you NEVER bump draft going into a corner in ANY racing series! My uncle raced modified and open wheel for years, and thats one thing he POUNDED into my head. NEVER! It wont end well! And second off, he needs to quit complaining.......... He doesnt realize that he wont win a championship unless he quits racing like its the old Cup format! U cant win a championship if u just finish in the top 10 or 5 every race. u have to win them! But im just really angry, Kasey was running strong the entire race, and had a good finish in sight, and gordon bump drafted him into the corner, knowing full well that the field was brake checking up in front of them...... then he bumped him again to dump him! He got what was coming to him tho! Same as Truex did when he threw that nasty block down when he lost the lead.......... The drivers are policing themselves, and i think that if u dont know how to play nice with one driver(especially one that the rest of the field likes) then the entire pack is going to hang u out to dry, or better yet, put u into the wall like u deserve! Im done now!
  21. retarded........... try changing the politics involved in deciding who gets to go to bowl games, and championship games. and Stop wasting time with rules about nullifying points. If u ask me, i a team scores, and there was nothing done that was against the basic rules of the game or that hurt someone (Im talking about BASIC rules, dont go out of bounds, if ur down ur down, no fouls((excluding this new crap)) and making sure theres the right number of guys on the field) then the points stand! Taking them away is one of the dumbest things ive ever heard. especially when the point in question is that of a personal and judgmental nature. ie. the Ref has the decision based on moral grounds, not technical grounds. Its defeating the entire purpose of the game. If you cant handle the trash, get off the field. I do agree with the excessive celebration rules currently in place. Youre a college athlete, not a professional.......... humble up boys...... and grow up too. But bottom line, what the entire NCAA Football Officials are missing is that theres a HUGE group of ticked off fans out there who dont care about things like these kind of changes, they want the BCS Format eliminated! Thats something they need to make progress on! >
  22. im gunna say right around the 4.5lbs mark. BUT id be thrilled to break 5 pounds! And on my new lake, I think thats a real possibility! Stay posted! ;D
  23. id rather be able to learn something from them fishing rough conditions than see them hauling in massive limits with easy techniques. I think its more interesting if they really have to fight for it. It seperates the Top from the Best........ not really the Best from the rest, thats why theyre pro! But regaurdless, someones gunna haul a monster out. thats just how these things go. To me it doesnt matter, as long as i can take the time to learn something from how they tackle a rough situation!
  24. for lack of a better way to describe my job. Im a telemarketer............... DO NOT Take a shot at me....... a i explained in another thread, (which i was chatty and doped on painkillers :-[ and didnt do my homework to find this thread) that i am not the jerk who calls u all the time and bugs u for stupid charitys, to buy stupid stuff, or to ask u dumb surveys. I do blood donor recruiting and scheduling, and customer service. But as of today, i have a new job! Im now our company social media service coordinator! (Ive been kissing butt for along time to get out of that phone cubicle!) AGAIN DO NOT SHOOT THE TELEMARKETER! thank you.... my fiance would appreciate it! ;D
