Buckhorn Reservoir, NC
To start off with, I will say that I'm in the process of putting up a post on NCAngler about this as well. I just like to get information from where ever I can. Now for the topic. I will be heading up to fish on Buckhorn Reservoir in a few weeks and just wanted to see if anyone on the boards had been there before. I went out on a kayak recently and it's a beautiful lake. While I was able to locate the road beds around the main river channel, I was only there in a kayak and was not able to find any underwater structure. So my question... what kind of techniques should I use at this lake? Anything seem to work better? I know a bit about fishing deep this time of year, but I also know that certain things work a little better from one fishing location to the next. Any spots I should look for? I'm not asking for all the secrets, just some info to get me started. I plan on picking up a topo map this weekend to start studying the drop-offs and maybe find some locations that way. Anyways, like I said the place was beautiful and I look forward to the trip. Also, thank you for what ever information you can pass on

best flourocarbon line
I use Yo-Zuri Hybrid Flouro/Nylon. I don't know for sure if the hybrid part makes it something you would shy away from, but I've had a lot of success with it. I've also had success with standard Silver Thread Flouro.

Wacky rigged senko-style bait in green pumpkin and pumpkin colors. The person I was fishing with also had luck with pearl flukes.

5" Jaw-Jack Swimbaits with spinning gear?
Good to hear and thanx for the reply. I assumed I wouldnt have much of a problem, but it's always nice to have someone back up that assumption when you are new to something. My set-up spinning uses 12lb flouro with a 7' mh rod. I think I'll be set.

Chowan River, Eastern NC
Went down last Saturday and had a blast. That area is gorgeous. Caught a lot of fish, but only one keeper. He weighed in at 3.95 lbs though so it was still a fun catch . Thanks again for the info, it really paid off .

5" Jaw-Jack Swimbaits with spinning gear?
So, I'm finally getting on the bandwagon with soft swimbaits. Figured I'd start with the 5" Jaw-Jack Swimbaits because I know *** has some great quality baits and I have heard good things about these. I've done some research already in the operation and hooks needed. My question is actually oriented around the rod and reel. Every article and thread I read that actually lists this information talks about a baitcaster and a MH-H rod. I do have a set-up like this, but I am very new to baitcasters and I'm still having trouble casting them. I'd like to be able to switch over to something I have confidence in. Has anyone set these up on a spinning combo and how well did it work for you? I know casting distance will not be as far. Do you think I might run into the bait twisting a lot in the water? In the end trying it will be the best bet, but I'm going out onto a lake this weekend and I'm just trying to get my facts together before I go.

Awesome. I took a look at where that was and that area looks pretty amazing! Thanks for the info! I know it's a bit in the future but I'll let everyone know how we do.

Chowan River, Eastern NC
One of the people I'm going up there with already posted on NCangler. We haven't had much luck there either :-/. Guess we will just have to try what we know . Thanks for the info though.

Chowan River, Eastern NC
Going to be up on the Chowan river fishing for the first time in about a months time and I'm wondering if anyone with a little bit of experience might help. I'll be putting in at Shoups Landing off of highway 13. I've google map'd this area and it looks great. Lots of cypress trees and from what I hear a lot of the trees tend to have nice 5-6ft holes around them. I'm thinking about throwing a white tandem spinnerbait or a white/chartreuse chatter bait at the trees and maybe throw some green pumpkin flukes as they are doing well for me. Are there any specific lures that work better than others up around this area? Or if you are willing to talk about it, any good spots to start casting? I'm really looking forward to it.

So I've read a lot on crankbaits, but still have one question...
Looks like I just need to keep throwing out the "cheaper" ones till I get the hang of it. Just another thing to start practicing with!

So I've read a lot on crankbaits, but still have one question...
So, like the title says, I've been reading up on crankbaits a lot lately. From what I have come across, not only are they great baits to use almost anytime, but during fall they seem to be one of the top choices. Which leads me to reading as many of the articles I can find on crankbaits specifically here on the site. One thing all of them seem to agree on is bouncing them off of structure. That is where my question comes in... How do you bounce a crank off of structure without getting it caught? :-? That is the #1 reason I typically don't throw a crankbait, and it seems that may be the reason they aren't up there in my producing lures. I almost always get them caught whenever there is anything around that they could possibly get caught on. So, what should I look for, or feel for that would help me brush this by some structure without getting them caught up. Honestly, if I could lose that fear (which I know might cost me some crankbaits to get the hang of) I would throw them a lot more. I would love to hear what you guys have to say. I have a few mid range ones and I would love to get some use out of them. PS, I'm going to keep searching for a good article, if I have missed one that already explains it, could you point me in the right direction. Thanks a ton.

ITS BUZZBAIT TIME_ I'm in the giving mood again-
1:30pm might be a little late, but I sent one anyways. I love buzzbaits, one of my favorite lures and I'm interested in the Cavitron. Definitely want to give it a try down here in eastern NC.

Anyone mix plastic colors on purpose so they bleed together?
Done it by accident, which lead to me doing it on purpose. I have had some pretty good success letting colors bleed. I had a brownish with white worm that mixed with red shad. It turned pink/orange/white. Very cool mix, like a milkshake. I tell ya Red Shad just keeps bleeding and bleeding.

First tourney - Tar River Bassmasters
I recently joined a fishing club near where I live called the Tar River Bassmasters. I had my first tournament ever with them Yesterday (8-30) and I had a great time. We went up to a boat ramp in a town called Washington here in eastern NC and set out at about 6 to fish the Tar River. It wasn't a huge tourney, just 10 people total, but still the first of hopefully many for me. Due to a lack of rain, it turned out to be very salty where we started so me and my partner decided to head up river, as did many other boats. The water definitely got a little less salty and thankfully wasn't too murky either. Many of us were worried that 3 days of rain might churn up the water too much. Heading up the river, we stopped at various ditches and small creeks joining the river. At one ditch, I threw out one of my favorite lures lately (Rage Tail Shad) and it turned out to be a great idea. As I ran it over some lily pads, right around the end near the boat, a big one hit it hard. Actually scared me a little. First fish of the day for me. Got it into the boat and it was a big one. I was thrilled. We wandered up the river more, fishing structure, ditches, creeks, and even a pond that formed outside the river. Through out the day me and my partner caught many fish. Sadly my partner only picked up two small keepers and even with many bass I couldn't get one to measure more than 13 3/4 inches. I wanted to stretch that one and see if I could get that last 1/4 inch out of him, but threw him back. Overall it was a fun day. The morning was cool and cloudy and it really didnt heat up till the last few hours of the tourney. At 3 we pulled in and weighed in. The fishing was pretty rough and I actually made it in 2nd place with one fish. The big guy weighing 4lbs 12ounces. The winner had 5lbs 3ounces. If I had just had one more keeper! But I still picked up big fish for the day. Pretty good for my first outing, if I do say so myself. Like I said, it was a lot of fun, and as long as I can keep some extra money on the side I think it will be the first of many tourney's to come. Here is a pic of the big fish.

Out at the secret pond :-)
It's the fish pictured in my avatar. Funny faces for the *** Tourney it helped me win. Here is the topic for it. http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1219411635/0 Actually just under 7lbs, but who is counting :. I caught it with a 5" Green/Chartreuse Laminate ***.

Out at the secret pond :-)
I'm the friend that goes down to the secret pond with him. He had been talking about these lures for a long time and finally got ahold of them this week. They did pretty good for him... not as good as my trick sticks though . But yeah, it's a regional thing regarding where he can find em. We looked everywhere around here. He ended up getting them shipped down here. Looks like it was a good move for him.

One bait, one month!
It may be that I'm still a newb. But I know the one bait that catches me fish every time Im out... 5" Trick Stick, T-rigged, Weightless... one color though? I have recently had about the same success on Smoke Red, Watermelon Candy, and Green Pumpkin/Chartreuse Laminate. (The three colors I own ) These have landed me all sizes (including my PB) of bass lately in a variety of ponds and rivers. And since I'm still young at fishing I love to catch any size fish. I haven't done any big lake fishing in a while, though.
