  1. Hey guys, after reading various posts and such I'm leaning more towards this Bass Baby mini toon by Bass Hunter. I like the wheels in the back and the higher gunnels to keep all my crap in the boat. A guy at directboats said the Bass Baby is what he recommends. Any thoughts to this particular model? It is one piece as opposed to two pieces that are stapled together like the Pelican.
  2. Turtle, THANKS for the input and especially the picture! A place that sells many different types of these boats sent me a note and suggested these Pelicans had problems and he recommended certain other models. I have mostly heard good things online from anybody who actually owned one. have you heard any firsthand repprts from other Pelican owners who experienced problems like cracks in the hull?
  3. I am surprised to see that a 10' aluminum jonboat only weighs about 80 pounds. I might have to give them a little more thought although the plastic pontoons offer some interesting aspects as well. Weight is a primary consideration. They seem to have about the same beam (48"). A 10' jonboat is a little less weight than an 8' minitoon. Trailering is not an option for the pond I need this for.
  4. Walmart has a $400 mini pontoon that is 8' long. It sounds like what I need for a small pond that I can not get a trailer into. I can take this thing from my truck to the water and back. Wondering if this is a decent little boat or if maybe some of the other brands offer some significantly better features? I know Bass Pro has a couple different ones. I'm gonna put a small trolling motor on it. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8187896
  5. Yes, I bought one and use it on a canoe. It works just fine. Seems reliable both for depth as well as marking fish. I sometimes mount it on my big boat up front as well as a friend's boat. Very versatile.
  6. I bought a 6.5' IM7 medium light spinning rod from Dicks on sale for $39 (normally $49. OK, I paid $29 with a $10 off coupon ). I don't like the reel seat (I've had the bottom plastic foot break on some other similar Fuji reel seats) but the price was pretty good. For now I'm gonna troll plugs for crappie with it. Anybody know who makes em? Any chance it is a rebranding of another good brand? I doubt it since 'Field & Strem' isn't something I think of as high end gear...
  7. Oh, I get it. I didn't think of that, but I've probably done such a good job cleaning, oiling and lubing it that now I am feeling every tiny imperfection! :'(
  8. Well, I'm definately forcing the grease down into the teeth. I make it a point to do that. Not hard to get it done either. I still think I'm feeling the geer teeth make contact even after being greased up like that. :-/
  9. IMHO those bags are crap. Worth it for free but not worth $7.95 for shipping. I quickly stopped using the one I got for buying an Ugly Stik awhile back.
  10. Thanks for the input! Most recent reel was a Pflueger Gold medal Pro (Dick's store model) - was super smooth until it needed a cleaning, then I can feel the gears afterwards. Same thing happened to an Okuma. Granted, neither reel is high end but the gearing feel seems to be worse after I clean them. It isn't really a noise issue for me. I do not use an acid brush (I can as I have some) but typically use the tube the grease comes in to squeeze a bead of grease down into all the teeth. The tubes have a spout that I use and I fill up all the teeth. I make sure I have it down in there good for all gears even though most seems to get squished out once the teeth cross each other once. Anyway, that's how I do it.
  11. Now that I am home I see I have 3 different greases, have used each one over time, and sort of recall similar results. That is why i figured it might just happen when gear connections are put back together. Anyway, here is what I have: Abu Garcia Silicote Reel Lube (made by Synco) Eagle Claw Reel Grease Super Lube Synthetic Grease with Syncolon PTFE
  12. I didn't bring my bottle of grease to work today ;D Which greases are known to cause this problem and which ones do not?
  13. I've noticed my reels don't feel "good as new" following a deep cleaning, oiling and greasing like I wish they would. Instead they certainly feel smoother than when I began, usually because the reel is a couple years old and grease inside has hardened up a bit or bearings needed a little oil. But it seems like I can feel the gear teeth interface now. I'm wondering if the original teeth interface was disturbed by reasembling and now new teeth are contscting slightly different due to wear and that is now more noticable?
  14. I bought an All Star 'Select' from Dick's for around $50 and went back to buy another after using it a short while. Mine are the 5.5' Light action model and I really like them. The 'Select' are specially made for Dick's so I imagine they are not from All Star's high end models.
  15. My Shimanos come in clam packs with no instructions, oil or grease.
  16. I've seen some cans of spray called Reel Magic or Real Magic that supposedly makes mono more limp without impacting strength. Does this stuff work or is it crap?
  17. my first attempt at using braid on a spinning reel had these knotting loops showing up on the casts. Eventually it stopped. I think I may have had too much line on and cutting a bit off each trip eventually got me to the right amount. Try taking about 10 yards off, more if you really overfilled it.
  18. I have several older spinning reels (late 1990's?) that came out before instant anti-reverse. They are in great shape but feel archaic when I use them on a trip with other newer reels that do have instant AR. Is it possible to convert them, cheaper than buying another reel? Is it just the roller bearing? Are those available to do this? Thanks!
  19. just seems suspicious the silver ones have the hook attache dusing one method but the gold ones have that hook eye split with wire snips and attached that way. I don't like it.
  20. this is a silver one, seems done correctly
  21. I bought some Silver Buddy lures supposedly sold by somebody who has obtained a bulk quantity from people previously associated with the original factory. These are purported to be original, not knock-offs or molds made of the originals or anything. What makes me suspicious is the eye of the treble hook has been cut so it could be assembled to the lure body. I've only used Silver Buddys a few years ago but this just seem to be how I remember them. Cutting the treble hook eye surely weakens the hell out of it. I'm wondering if anybody who knows about Silver Buddys can confirm if this is how they were actually made? This was only done on the gold lures - the silver ones used a treble hook that did not need to be cut.
  22. I don't see the BPS reel when I go to their website. Could you post a link? I have the Pflueger and love it, but can't find it at Dicks anymore.
