  1. hello. ill be doing a 5 day fishing trip in the boundary waters canoe area in late august. i will be base camping in lake Insula in the northern part. what type of presentations do you recommend for small mouth in the BWs? i heard its rocky and pretty clear water so i was thinking of football jigs (craw trailers), 4 and 5 inch senkos, fat ikas, grubs and tubes. ill prob also try drop shot with finesse worms. anyone had any luck up there with these presentations? what else would you recommend? thanks in advance -z
  2. if i only had one rod id get a spinning rod with a shimano 2500 reel. the rod would be 6'6" , fast action with a lure weight rating of 1/8oz - 1/2oz. a good quality rod with those specs should handle almost everything except heavy jigs heavy spinner baits and big swim baits.
  3. beautiful fish! sorry to be off topic but i wanted to ask about the kayak. is that an ultimate? how do you like it? im working overseas and ill be moving back to the arlington area next spring and plan on buying a kayak. was looking at either the ultimate or the manta ray. ill probably hit you guys up to see if i can tag along sometime. reading posts like this sure make me homesick
  4. i just bought the glx SJR783S a few wks ago. id either get that or the SJR843S if you decide on a 7 footer. if you want something with a heavier action get the SJR844S http://products.gloomis.com/gl/products/family.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302032507&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474395181201&bmUID=1217487973658
  5. SOLD! just won the GLX version on ebay for 235 shipped. now its time for a reel. ill bug you guys about that later. thanks for the replies -z
  6. if powder paint is the way to go ill do that. any particular brand i should purchase? thanks again -z
  7. can you recommend a good long lasting black paint to paint my jig heads with? spray paint would be ideal as i have hundreds of them. thanks. -z
  8. im looking to buy the G LOOMIS MBR 783C (6'6", 10 - 17lb line, 1/4 - 3/4oz lure, Fast action, Medium / Heavy) rod. this will be mostly for 3/8-1/2oz jigs but id also like to use it to throw 3/8-5/8oz spinnerbaits. would this be a good choice for these applications? thanks in advance -z
  9. ive never personally used one, but i hear the mega bass loomis rods recommended alot for worm/jig. IMX or GLX would be the way to go. pricey but they have a "no questions asked" warranty if you send them 50 bucks and the broken rod so unless you sink the rod it should last a lifetime. ive been looking at those rods and the curado for my next combo.
  10. X2 save the trees, use internet 8-) my computer wont make it to the toilet
  11. sure its your money. but if you can afford to live without the refund, send it back. that way next years taxes wont be so high for people who cant afford them. why should we spend govt money on education when we can take all these monies and pay for another week out in the desert. your saying because this guy wants to spend 12k on a boat he can afford 80k or so of tuition. i guess any college student who can afford something like a car should not get any aid.
  12. instead of reeling it in, let it sink to the bottom. wait a few seconds and give it little hops. fish it slow.
  13. this guy wants to buy a bass boat and you guy's are saying he shouldnt take the financial aid for school because he can afford it? what a joke. next time you guys get a tax refund, go ahead and send it back. you can afford it right? to the original poster who was only asking for advice on a bassboat - i hear the stratos fiberglass boats are the best deal around. do some research, find out what you can afford. maybe start a new account, post the same question and leave out your age to get some real advice with this. good luck -z
  14. dont let these jealous people deter you. get yourself a nice boat and eat ramen for a yr at school.
  15. im going to be buying a baitcast rod soon and i have a question about lure weight. what is the ideal lure weight for a rod with a lure weight range of 1/4oz-3/4oz? would it be the middle of the spectrum (1.2oz)? thanks -z
  16. grab a light spinning rod, a canoe and do an overnight float with a good friend on a smallmouth river.
  17. i like fishing with light tackle as well. right now im using an avid 6'3" ml extra fast. i think theres too much current in the rivers i go to to use an ultra light but i can imagine how fun it must be to bring in a 3lb smallie on one.
  18. is that the nearest accesible launch site? would you estimate its more than 5 miles? i ordered some maps of the upper potomac but theyre taking forever to arrive. thanks -z
  19. is there a place to launch downstream from algonkian before the falls? id like to do the paddleing in the beginning of the trip, maybe even past algonkian and float back to the car. any recommendations?
  20. what's your favorite rod for smallmouth fishing? im looking for suggestions for something to throw tubes, 1/8 oz jigs and small soft plastics with. looking for brands and model numbers. thanks -z
  21. i just read about the the xpeditor program and i changed my order to a GLX before they shipped it. I hate this forum
  22. someone from the river smallies suggested this guy's jigs: http://www.tourneyjigs.com/ thought id add it to the list.
  23. I have the Fenwick HMG GS 66M at home that i will not get to see or use for a few months. I cannot seem to find the action of this rod anywhere online. is this a treble hook type rod or is it for plastics/jigs? thanks in advance -z
  24. ive hauled a canoe on a civic dozens of times with foam blocks and ratchet tie down straps. one strap through the front door and one through the back. never had any problems. make sure your doors are open when you strap down unless you like to climb through the windows.
  25. i see that loomis' MH is like most other's M. ill go with MH. thanks for the replies. -z
