  1. The guy you want to talk to about that area is New River. He posted on this thread and invited people to pm him for information and possibly a fishing trip. Nice guy, we were going to go fishing last spring, but my health prevented it. >
  2. IMO, the first thing you need to do is disregard the flippin switch. I can not flip with the switch. I back the spool tension knob off, put the brake on all the way, and do smooth easy movements. Any quick whip of the rod will result in a backlash at first. Good luck
  3. Got a question for someone who has taken advantage of this program. I understand that you can trade in a reel during the Spring Sale. Does anyone know how much they give you for a reel? I have a Johnny Morris Signature, that I'm wanting to trade in for another reel. So I'm just wondering if it worth the trip. Thank you in advance.
  4. Well wishes for a speedy recovery.
  5. Congrats, stupid scales, you could always say it wasn't calibrated right . Post the pic already, lol.
  6. congrats man, I would love to go fishing, but alas we are iced over, thin ice too.
  7. I live in Lewisburg, give me a pm when you are in the area and we will go fishin. I think the next state record largemouth will come out of Tuckahoe, awesome fishery, but as you know it gets hammered. The original poster there is a tackle shop in Fairlea JTM Sporting goods, the fellas who operate the shop are always willing to help you out as well. Good luck
  8. I live within 3 miles of the Greenbrier and with in 45 minutes of the New. When you want to go, drop me a pm and I will gladly tell you of some good float trips, baits to use, etc. If you want I will even guide you for free down the Greenbrier, some great fishing. I always get excited when someone mentions my rivers on here. take care.
  9. You have got to be kidding.
  10. This is my favorite tattoo. I have one being designed now that I can't wait to see. I'll post the artist rendering when I get it back.
  11. If you are looking new, which I would suggest as you are a newbie to the gun world, the you can't go wrong with the Remington 870, you would want the express instead of the wingmaster, big difference in price. Remington has had some quality control issues but they have since resolved them. There is nothing wrong with the Mossberg 500, they even beat out Remington for a short run for military and police issue shotguns. Another option would be the Benelli Nova, I refuse to shoot a Benelli though, IMO overpriced, and underperformer, I know I will get hammered for that comment, but oh well. If you want a mean looking gun, personally I don't think there is anything more intimidating that looking down the business end of a SXS shotgun, but that will be way out of your price range, good luck
  12. Fellow ***s, I have been suffering with a new badly herniated disc since May. After exhausting all other options I find my self once again heading for the operating table. This time it will be C7-T1, which will extend my neck fusion from c5-t1. I've not been on much lately and this is a big part of the reasons why. Anyway, please remember my family in your prayers, I'm grumpier than usual, plus they have to take care of all of my chores around the house. Thanks
  13. I used to go down to Columbia during the summer and work for my Dad. We put in natural gas lines, typically in the city. Columbia gets very hot during July and August. I have lived in Myrtle Beach, Savannah, and Oak Island NC (at the tip of Cape Fear). Columbia is definitely hotter than any of these, but I've not spent a summer in New Orleans or Houston, or Phoenix, so I can't say it is the hottest! My uncle is retired Navy and lives in Gaston, he was a CT, I'm retired (disabled) Coast Guard. I would like to be near a military base and a good VA hospital, so I can continue to get the care I require. Texas has a strong pull as well as TN. I may end up just snow birding as I don't know if I can convince my wife to relocate permanently. Kent, If I come to TN, I would request some water time so I can get to know the sweet spots. I'll provide the boat!
  14. Here ya go, take a look through these breeds and see which one you think it is. http://www.gundogmag.com/gundog_breeds/
  15. never heard of it
  16. Thai, Do you have a Wachtelhund? Neat little dogs that bark when they flush, that would be a nice notification. I mainly used pointing dogs, but did have a springer once, I used her to flush the birds after the pointing breeds located it, if it was to thick for me to get to or if I was unable to traverse the terrain, and of course retrieving duties. As far as birddogs that I've shared the field with and owned me. English Setters 3, English Pointer 1, German Shorthair 1, and a German Wirehair 1. My favorite of these was the wirehair, his life was too short, and could never bring myself to the point that I could get another. My second favorite were my english setters, I had one Ryman, one Smith bred and one LLewellyn, the llewellyn was my favorite, was actually scent pointing at nine weeks. Awesome little dog, unfortunately I had to sell her, as my health declined to the point I was no longer able to chase wild birds, nor train. It sucked, still does.
  17. Roger, Thanks for the heads up on the GA taxes, have relatives there and they never mentioned it. My family in Florida is always complaining about the property tax, something like 7-8 thousand yearly. I gave my reason for not including Florida, because I thought you sorta asked why, when you stated that I hadn't included Florida in my short list. I actually have family in SC, actually my Father has lived outside of Columbia since the early eighties, may be part of the reason I didn't think about it, lol. Don't get me wrong I love my Dad, just don't want to live down the road from him. Actually I don't like living down the road from any of my family, sounds awful I know. I think it has to do with my physical problems, they all tend to think I'm more limited than I am. I could actually go spend the rest of the winter with my Dad or Uncle in Columbia, and see how I like it. Thanks again.
  18. Not to be rude but bird dogs are my speciality, definitely not a GWP, nor a setter of any breed. After looking at the picture more, the more I'm convinced it is a small munsterlander, I don't have that copy of Gun Dog, cancelled my subscription when I had to quit hunting. The head of the dog in question is too refined for a Large Munsterlander, and it definitely isn't a setter head, ears are set wrong and muzzle too short, muzzle is also shorter than the typical German Longhaired. The German Wirehair typically has furnishings, beard and eyebrows, see pic below. There are several breeders for the SM, but pups are quite expensive. Picture of Munsterlanders, German Longhaired and German Wirehair, the bearded one is the wirehair. first one in series is a black phase Large Munsterlander, 2nd GWP, third Small Munsterlander, and finally a German Longhaired
  19. Florida is out due to cost of living, property taxes are horrible, etc. Besides I'm not a nearly dead or a newly wed, so I'm not to sure I'm allowed to relocate, ;D. Seriously parts of Florida would be fine, just no farther south or a line running from Tampa to the East coast. No offense if you live in Florida just not one of my top five.
  20. I've used the online version a few times. From my experience you need to know what your deductions are and also the lesser used deductions especially if you run your own business. Which forms etc. I've always done my own taxes, and actually like doing mine, I typically end up doing mine and half the families. A couple of years ago my lil brother used H&R Block, and they hosed him, I had him show me his taxes, re-did them for him and saved him a few thousand in taxes, all legally and above board. Also beware even though you pay someone else to do your taxes, it is your responsibility to know whether or not they are done properly and are accurate. Example the tax preparer omits some tax that you owe, or if they screw them up royally, they are not liable at all, they are not even required to assist you with an audit. The only exception is a CPA, and even then there is enough wiggle room that you are on the hook and they are not.
  21. This winter has finished me off. I'm sick of enduring winter, and we don't even have really bad ones anymore. I live in WV, am a chronic pain patient, I am also very weather sensitive, it has been so cold here recently I think that even the metal in my body is cold >. Anyway I'm very uncomfortable here for about six months a year, so I'm looking for suggestions as to where to move. Requirements, mild winters, good to great bass fishing, I would rather not get too far away from my family, all live in WV, I would like to stay within a 24 hour drive. I'm considering TX, SC, TN, LA, GA, AL or MS, out of these areas which would you choose and why.
  22. It is one of three breeds. A small or large musterlander or an outside possibility of a long hair german pointer. These links you will see dogs with a lot of white and some that are mottled like the one in the picture. http://www.smallmunsterlander.org/ http://www.lmcna.org/ http://www.germanlonghairpointers.com/
  23. Believe it or not I was 35 when awarded permanent and total disability. Takes about 2 to 2 1/2 years, mainly due to my age. Disability pay is not much and if it wasn't for my veteran's pay I wouldn't be able to make ends meet. Good luck to you and your wife.
  24. I know what you mean, if it wasn't for my meds I really don't know what I would do. I tried to live without them for a long time, and the doctor finally convinced me that I would not become an addict and to trust him. The relief I get is not complete, I would hate to know how much it would take to make me pain free, but I imagine it would leave me in a stupor. Sometimes I just get sick and tired of it. I have a five year old son and feel so guilty that I can't play wrestle with him or rough house like he wants to do, I'm going to miss teaching him how to play football, throw a fast ball curve, etc and know I'll never coach his teams like I did for his siblings. I'm just 40, and have a long time to deal with this, I'm doing the best I can, and have some friends who are in the same boat, we get together and vent to each other sometimes it really does help. Tin, I know what you mean feeling like you let the world down, it sucks. If it wasn't for my wife no one would get a gift from me this year. FWIW I'm heading back to the operating table next month, C7-T1 pushing on the cord causing problems. I've been putting it off now for about six months and now it is getting unbearable.
