Any idea which month of Bass Master it was in?

I was at BPS the other day and seen lure retrievers. The guy behind the counter said you can make them cheaper. He didn't tell me how... What is the best way to make one? Is using a clip and a heavy weight better? Is BPS retriever worth buying in lieu of the headache of making one? http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_52869____SearchResults

I for one have developed a perfectly good logical answer as to why I am starting my soft plastic bait collection. My little girl loves to play with them. Especially lizards and frogs. I buy a pack and give her one. It keeps her happy for about 10-20 minutes. That is money well spent in my opinion. All you need is a 4 year old! ;D

I have some Jigs that need to be painted and some of the hooks are a tad rusty. My dad gave me an old tackle box with a bunch of older jigs in it. I'm going to sand the hooks down and sharpen them. I thought the paint might help keep them from rusting. I thought if I'm going to paint them I might as well paint them red.
  5. Plates. That is what I was trying to find out. The specs are comparable and I am only looking at 27s. I assumed that acid and the plates would probably make the difference but wasn't sure what to ask about. Walmart and Sam's kill me. A lot of time you can get the same price that Sam's has in a smaller quantity at Walmart. I don't understand why Walmart still builds Sam's stores when they sell almost identical items right next to each other. I'm really trying to figure out why Bass Pro charges more for their batteries than anyone else.
  6. I have a buddy that takes competitiveness to a whole new level. He talks more crap than anybody I know. He keeps track of his stats in everything he does. He takes the fun out of a lot of things because everything is a competition. He makes alot of things more fun for this same reason. He loves to trash talk. He talked me into going fishing with him. We fished from the bank of a couple of ponds. As soon as we threw out first cast out he became a different person. He was calm. Very calm. I mean really really calm. He is not a calm person by nature. He cast a few times and then came over and watched me fish. He watched my technique and patiently explained to me how to do better. He was more excited than I was when I caught fish. We hit a dry spell and he was more worried about me getting bored than anything. It is amazing how much fishing transforms him. He becomes one of the best and most patient teachers I know. Anything else and he gets super competitive and can't teach. Fish with him and all he is concerned with is helping you catch fish. He makes fishing so much fun. He doesn't get upset at all not matter what you do. Most of the time at the beginning he didn't even fish. He just calmly watched me fish then threw a party every time I caught one. If he ever had a calling it is to teach people to fish. I have never met anyone that can teach as well as he can. I cannot wait until my daughter is old enough for him to teach her. If you spent the weekend with him you would completely understand and be as awed as I am. It is amazing watching the change that over comes him when it comes to fishing. How can you not love a hobby that can have that good of an effect on people?

Is it a bad idea to paint the hooks? I have some that I would like to paint red. I am a little worried about poisoning the fish though. Is there a paint that won't harm the fish when the hook penetrates. That sounds funny to ask. I want to make the fish bite a sharp object hard enough that it can't get away but I'm worried about the paint hurting it! Any thoughts or does it really matter?
  8. I have discount coupons for Advanced Auto, Dicks Sporting Goods, and my uncle works for Pep Boys. My question is are the batteries from bass pro and dicks that much better than the ones for auto parts stores? I realize Walmart is cheaper than anybody else but I don't mind spending $100 compared to $60 if the battery will last longer. I can get batteries from Advanced Auto or Pep Boyz for about $75, walmart is about $60, Dicks and Bass Pro are around $100. I don't mind spending an extra $25 for a better battery if it is worth the extra. Thanks,
  9. I can relate to this. I paid $120 for a pair about 6 years ago. They are now at the bottom of Patoka Lake. Since then I haven't been able to justify paying alot for sunglasses anymore. The $20 cheapies look the same unless you really start nit picking. As far as I have been able to tell they work the same also. The Anarchys were the last $100+ pair I bought. Sometimes you are just paying for a cool name. Other times you get what you pay for. I believe sunglasses are way over priced. Have you ever seen how much mark up/ profit there is on sunglasses?
  10. From reading the description I looks like I can mount this on the bow. Would this affect the reading of the transducer at all? It looks like that is going to be about $30 plus. The trolling motor mount is going to be about $30ish. Price is almost a wash. Any thoughts on which is a better set up?
  11. I'm trying to figure out a way to mount a transducer on the bow instead of the back of the boat. I'm still debating on sticking it on my MK foot controlled Power Drive TM. I have a Humminbird 565. I was thinking about rigging up something like the portable fishing buddy clamp mounts. Then I can set it to the side the boat as opposed to my TM. I am assuming that if may be a hair less likely to hit something this way. Is that a bad idea or should I just suck it up and put it on the TM. I have a '14 modified 'V' jon. This will be the only fish finder I have. I would rather have it on the front of the boat in lieu of the back. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
  12. Next question. How often do you really use the dual beam? I now assume that the larger the beam area the more screen clutter there is. The HB 565 has dual beam display and a higher pixel count. If the dual beam is not used very often would it be ok to step down to something like the HB 535 or will the higher pixel count on the 565 make that much more of a difference? It looks like the HBs have more data refining options, and more power over the Garmin. The Garmin has a color display. Does the color display make of up shortages?
  13. I'm still trying to answer my own questions. I think I got dual frequency and dual beam confused. I think... I just noticed the the beams on the garmin appear to be Cone angle: Dual Beam: 14ø - 45ø. The beams on the hummingbird appear to be 20 and 60. I assume that this means that the HB has a broader range at the same depth? http://www.fishfinder-store.com/garmin-fishfinder-300c-3-5.html http://www.fishfinder-store.com/hufi565.html I'm not really sure what else to compare other then the price and the screen type and size? G = color, smaller screen,. HB = LCD but larger screen. I assume due to the broader range the HB is better? I just noticed that the Garmin watts are quite a bit lower. Does this make that big of a difference?
  14. http://www.fishfinder-store.com/humminbird-718-lcd-fishfinder.html Would this be better than the Garmin? I'm getting overwhelmed with all of the options. I fish mainly small electric lakes. Do I really need to spend the extra on something with dual beams? I noticed that the single beams only gives you 1/3 coverage of the depth. I assumed that this is where the dual beam helped out. I have been reading that dual beams are only good on much deeper lakes. 50'+ deep. If you are in 15' of water how does a single beam really help is you are only getting 5' of coverage area? Do you mainly use your finders just for depth at this point? Would dropping back to something like the hummingbird with the larger screen be better over the color garmin? Sorry for the noob questions but the more I read the more I'm getting confused. I am trying to stay around the $200 range. I bought the Garmin 300c from Bass Pro last night based on the sales guys recommendation. I'm second guessing the small screen. If an LCD screen in my price range is going to be a better finder then I really don't mind giving up the advantage of an easier to ready color screen. The sales guy said they just dropped the price on the Garmin 300C from $350ish. I guess my question is if the 20 degree beam is sufficient or is the dual beam worth the money in my area. I live in Southern Indiana. Anyhow. I'm lost. I'm on a budget and this is my first fish finder if you haven't noticed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  15. Are the Garmin 300C fishfinders any good? http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_97550_250003001_250000000_250003000_250-3-1

Very well put. I know that is exactly what I have been doing to keep from losing my mind. Now if only my 3 1/2 year old daughter could be so inclined. She is DEFINITELY ready for it to warm up...
  17. Think there is that big of a difference in quality?
  18. Ah. I have a harbor freight about 4 miles from me. Has anyone compared them to the Bass Pro lights? I just paid $60 for a set from Bass Pro. Looks like I will be taking them back and going to Harbor Freight.
  19. Thanks for the heads up on the tinned wire. I just assumed regular wire would be fine. I never thought about the green corrosion. Thanks for the Help LEDs it is then!
  20. I was looking at those in the their catalog. Are they worth the money or is there a cheaper alternative? Let me rephrase my thoughts. I don't mind replacing the bulb every once in a while. I just don't want to replace them every other time I take my boat out. I like LEDs but for some uses they are still way over priced for what they are. Are the LED tail lights worth the extra or are there some comparable traditional lights that are just as water tight? Like these: http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_18356_225005004_225000000_225005000_225-5-4 I don't mind paying more for LEDs as long as they are actually worth the extra amount
  21. Ok. I'm helpless. I can only assume that this has been discussed before. For some reason I cannot get anything to come up by searching. Somedays I feel retarded... Anywho. I just bought my first boat. Yay for me!!!! Well beside the tinyt 8' jon boat that was to unstable for me to take out. It is a 1985 14' Lowe modified 'V', 40" bottom. New floors already installed. 1980s 15hp Evinrude. New foot controlled Minn Koto 40lb thrust troller. Hummingbird 525 fish finder. All in excellent to new condition. The motor starts on the first pull every time and is in pristine condition. The trailer is the roughest part of the whole deal but it just needs some TLC. It has no working lights. I have to rewire the trailer and install new lights. What are some good submersible lights. I only want to do this once. What trailer lights do you guys use? I don't want to constantly replace bulbs and deal with shortages. Thanks,
  22. Beds are simply once you get the bull crap out of the way. There is one coil maker that makes about 80% of all the coils that go into almost every brand name bad. Same bed just under a different brand name. More coils is not always better. More coils mean more support but a stiffer bed. Same thing with wire size. Thicker the wire the stiffer the bed. They are now making coil beds that have zones in them. The term escapes me at the moment but the coils are zoned to make some part stiffer. The stiffer the bed the more pressure you feel. The softer the bed the weirder you will lay. To much of either way and you will not sleep very well. You need to lay on the mattress 25 to 30 minutes. It takes that long for you to get bored enough to really relax. Anything under 25 minutes won't give you the same feel. You really need to do this at least twice to the mattress that you think you want to buy. I have bad hips. We went with a memory foam mattress. Everything I said above still applies here. The denser the foam does not make it better. The denser the foam the stiffer it is. The denser the foam is also what makes it more expensive. You don't want the memory foam portion to thick. Then you will sink to far in. To little and you won't get the advantage of memory foam. You have to watch the foam quaility in any bed. I'm not talking about the memory foam portion. Even on memory foam beds the whole bed is not memory foam. There is an underlying layer of regular foam that is there for support. This is where a lot of manufactures cut corners. This is the foam that will break down first. A good memory foam mattress has about 8" of underlying foam and 3" of memory foam and 2" of what they call the new cooler memory foam. Alot of time Brand name mattress have the same exact componets. You are just paying for the name. That being said alot of off brand mattress use the cheap materials that will break down in a short time. You normally want to look in the middle of the pack. You get quality with paying for the name. WHAT to buy is where you need to do your research. Most importantly spend 30 minutes on at least 2 different days trying your mattress out. It took my wife and I two weeks to decide on our mattress. In my opinion memory foam is worth the money.
  23. I think they will beat the Vikes. They generally don't really start flopping until the 2nd week. Their Defense will probably step up for week one.

I mainly was looking towards the instructional videos for presentations. Reading about and watching is two entirely different things at times. Sorry Glenn. My mind did not pick up on the fact that I was advertising another competitors site. My brain doesn't work right at times. I just started receiving Bass Master and they sent me a mailer about it. I liked the idea of the videos.

Is anyone a member of ESPN's Bass insider? Is it worth the money? I was intrigued by the online how to videos by the pros.
